With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved Essie Bee Simmons, who peacefully departed this world on April 11, 2026, surrounded by her loving family at her cherished home. Born on September 11, 1944, in Rockford, IL, Essie's life was a testament to love, resilience, and unwavering devotion to those she held dear. Essie was the cherished daughter of Willie R. and Bessie Ree Jarrett. She grew up in a family filled with love and warmth, alongside her siblings Velma Buchanan, Evelyn Simmons, Brenda Whitaker, Thomas Jarrett, and Jerry Jarrett. She was predeceased by her beloved parents; her brother, Willie Sam Jarrett; sisters, Helen Faye and Ella Mae Jarrett; and her precious grandchildren, Brittany Simmons Charlton and Victor Simmons, whose memories she carried tenderly in her heart. On November 12, 1969, Essie married the love of her life, Willie Simmons, with whom she built a beautiful family and shared a deep and abiding love for over five decades. Together, they raised a family that stands as a testament to their dedication and commitment. Essie is mourned by her devoted husband, Willie, and their children: Victor (Camille) Simmons, Edward “Sandy” Jarrett, Renee (Mark Whitaker) Simmons, Tracy Simmons, Tonja Jarrett (Sturdivant), Sonya (Steven Gates), and Willie Antoine Simmons. Her legacy also lives on through her 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to her life. Essie's educational journey took her through the halls of West High School, shaping her into the remarkable woman we all adored. Her career at National Lock spanned 25 years, where her dedication and work ethic were an inspiration to her colleagues. She later worked at Provena Saint Joseph Center, leaving an indelible mark before retiring to spend more time with her family. A woman of many talents, Essie was known for her love of cooking and baking, often filling her home with the comforting aromas of her culinary creations. Her Sunday afternoons were reserved for bingo, a pastime that brought her joy and camaraderie. Essie’s gentle voice and radiant smile could light up any room, and she had a unique ability to make everyone feel special and loved. A celebration of Essie's life will be held on April 24, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home, located at 504 N Walnut Avenue, Freeport, IL. We invite all who knew and loved Essie to join us in honoring her remarkable life. The Simmons family extends their deepest gratitude to everyone for the prayers, kindness, phone calls, and love shared during this difficult time. They look forward to expressing their appreciation personally in the days to come. Though we grieve her absence, we find solace in the profound impact Essie had on each of us.
