Lieutenant Esbon Alexis Gumbs
December 3, 1965 — October 3, 2026
Lieutenant Esbon Gumbs, a beloved son, brother, father, and friend, was born on December 3, 1965, in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. He passed suddenly at home on October 3, 2026. His departure leaves a profound void in the hearts of those who knew and cherished him.
Esbon was the treasured son of the late Jean Maria Liburd and Esmond Arthur Gumbs, affectionately known as Jeff. He is survived by his loving son, Omar Gumbs, and his siblings, Julie Mae Pickering, Julene Ward, Mildred Gumbs, and Ervin Grant. His family was his pride and joy, and he dedicated his life to ensuring their happiness and well-being.
His formative years were spent in St. Thomas, where he attended Dober Elementary School and J. Antonio Jarvis Elementary School. Esbon continued his education at Wayne Aspinal, now known as Addelita Cancryn Junior High, before graduating from Charlotte Amalie High School. His commitment to learning and growth was evident from a young age.
Esbon's entrepreneurial spirit led him to explore various career paths, including taxi driving, T-shirt design, and music. He dedicated 30 years of service to the Virgin Islands Fire and Emergency Medical Services, retiring as a Lieutenant. After retirement, he continued to contribute to his community as a Managing Member of Indoor/Outdoor Cleaning Services, LLC, a building and office cleaning service.
He was a devoted member of the St. Phillips Seventh Day Adventist Church, where his faith was a guiding force in his life. Esbon was also an avid sports enthusiast. Growing up in Oswald Harris Court, he participated in neighborhood sports games like football, stickball, and basketball. His passion for basketball was evident as he played with the "Papa" Rivera Flyers and later in summer and adult leagues, including the Fireman's Basketball League. He found joy in dice and card games, often using his quick wit and humor to bring smiles to those around him.
Esbon was known for his warm smile, quick wit, and the ability to make others laugh. His personable nature and charm earned him the affectionate title of a "Ladies’ man." He was a beacon of joy and laughter, always ready with a joke to lighten the mood.
A service to honor Esbon's life will be held on October 29, 2026, at 9:00 AM at the Philadelphia Seventh Day Adventist Church, located at #5 Raphune Hill. For those unable to attend in person, a livestream will be available on YouTube under philadelphiasdachurchusvi5824.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Esbon's memory, to continue his legacy of kindness and community support.
Esbon's spirit will forever live on in the hearts of his loved ones and the community he touched with his laughter and love. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered.
