Ernestine Wakefield
September 27, 1945 — June 14, 2026
Ernestine Wakefield, a cherished matriarch, beloved friend, and beacon of kindness, peacefully departed this world on June 14, 2026, at the age of 80. Born on September 27, 1945, in the heart of Louisville, Kentucky, Ernestine was the daughter of Eugene and Dorothy Collier, who instilled in her the values of love, resilience, and community. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Robert and Raydell Collier, and her sisters Louise Garnett-Thornton and Shirley Collier. Now, she is joyfully reunited with them in eternal peace.
Ernestine’s life was a testament to the strength of family and the warmth of human connection. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her devoted children, Joyce McDonald (Fred), Allen (Kathy), Keith Wakefield (Monfrida), Tina, Chirl, Larry, Tammy, and her honorary daughter, Anna Wakefield. Her nurturing spirit also touched the lives of her 13 grandchildren, and she was blessed with a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless friends who became family.
A proud alumna of DuValle Jr. High, Ernestine's life was marked by hard work and dedication. She spent eight years contributing her skills as an assembly line worker at GE Appliance Park, before closing out her career with heartfelt service at Big Bird Daycare, South East Day Care, and Burns Janitorial. Her colleagues remember her as a low-key, funny soul, whose commitment to her work was only surpassed by her dedication to her family.
Ernestine's life was filled with simple joys and profound love. She found happiness in the kitchen, where she cooked meals that brought her family together, and in the pews of her church, where she found solace in gospel music. Her laughter was most often heard during bingo nights, where her competitive spirit was as vibrant as her smile.
In a world often hurried and complex, Ernestine was a haven of calm and humor. She avoided drama, choosing instead to fill her days with laughter and love, always ready to lend a hand to those she held dear. Her kindness was quiet but powerful, a testament to a life lived with grace and humility.
As we gather to celebrate Ernestine’s life, we are reminded of the profound impact she had on all who knew her. Her legacy is one of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family and friends. Though she will be deeply missed, her spirit lives on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to be touched by her presence.
In honoring Ernestine, we are reminded to cherish our loved ones, to find joy in the everyday moments, and to approach life with the same gentle humor and warmth that she did. Her memory is a blessing, and her life, a beautiful example of love in action. May she rest in eternal peace.
