Ernestine McClam Jacob
June 13, 1934 — May 21, 2026
Ernestine McClam Jacob, a beloved matriarch, dedicated nurse, and fervent fashionista, peacefully departed this life on May 21, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on June 13, 1934, in the charming city of Charleston, South Carolina, Ernestine's journey was one filled with love, laughter, and an indomitable spirit.
The daughter of Henrietta Wilson White and Edward Wilson, Ernestine was raised with the values of compassion and perseverance, which she carried throughout her life. She was predeceased by her devoted parents, her cherished sisters Mary Drain and Lee Wilson, her beloved husbands Freddie H. McClam and Dennis Jacob, her dear son Freddie H. McClam, and her grandson Gabriel. Each of these losses she bore with a grace that inspired all who knew her.
Ernestine was a woman of remarkable achievements, graduating from high school and nursing school with a determination that would define her career. She began her professional journey as a dietician at Queens General Hospital. Ever eager to expand her skills and impact, she later returned to school to become a Licensed Practical Nurse, a role through which she touched countless lives with her care and compassion.
In 1954, Ernestine married her first love, Freddie H. McClam, with whom she shared a life of joy and three wonderful children: Nadine, Shannon, and Kenneth. Her love story continued when she found happiness again with Dennis Jacob, whom she married in 1987. Her family was her pride and joy, and she was the adored grandmother to Christopher, Brittany, Morgan, and Elliott, and great-grandmother to Nova, Mason, Nori, and a baby girl soon to grace the world.
A woman of faith, Ernestine was a devoted member of her church community, where she was known for her sharp sense of style—especially her impeccably chosen hats. Her passion for fashion was matched only by her love for shopping and the occasional thrill of a casino visit. She was also a culinary magician, drawing family and friends to her table with her legendary cooking and baking.
Ernestine was a woman of super confidence, decisiveness, and directness, qualities that defined her interactions and relationships. Her engaging personality made her a friend to many, and her thoughtful nature and sense of humor endeared her to all. She was a jokester at heart, always ready with a quip to lighten the mood and bring smiles to those around her.
Perhaps one of the most extraordinary aspects of Ernestine's life was her role as a foster mother. With an open heart and home, she fostered more than 100 children, offering them love, stability, and the nurturing guidance that only she could provide.
Ernestine leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering faith. Her sister, Lizzie Lowery, and her extensive family will continue to honor her memory and cherish the lessons she imparted.
As we bid farewell to Ernestine, we celebrate a life well-lived and a woman well-loved. Her spirit will continue to light our paths, as we carry forward her legacy of kindness, strength, and style. Rest in peace, dear Ernestine, knowing you have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing you.
