Ernestine Edwards September 22, 1943 - May 8, 2026 With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Ernestine Edwards, who left this world peacefully on May 8, 2026, in the comforting embrace of her loving family and the skilled hands of her caregivers at the hospital. Her journey began on September 22, 1943, in the quaint and nurturing surroundings of Greene County, North Carolina, born to Inez Winstead and the late John Thomas Speight of Stantonsburg, NC. Ernestine was a pillar of strength and grace, a woman whose life was a testament to resilience, kindness, and unwavering faith. Her education in the Greene County School system laid the foundation for a life marked by dedication, compassion, and a deep commitment to her community. A successful business owner in Washington, DC, Ernestine's professional life was characterized by her entrepreneurial spirit and her ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Her business acumen was matched only by her generosity, as she was known to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, always with a gentle smile and a listening ear. Ernestine's spiritual journey was deeply intertwined with her community at the New Hope Free Will Baptist Church, where she was an active member until her health no longer permitted. Her service as a Deaconess, her participation in the Daughter's of Destiny and the Heavenly Lights Ministry, and her dedication to Sunday School and Bible classes at Largo Landing, speak volumes of her faith and love for her church family. She was a tither and a quiet force for good, inspiring others with her devotion and kindness. In her personal life, Ernestine was known for her love of cooking, a skill she mastered with the same passion and precision she applied to everything she did. Her dishes were a staple at family gatherings, where her laughter and soft-spoken words infused warmth and joy into every occasion. In her younger years, she was known to light up the dance floor with her graceful moves, often arriving in her beloved Corvette or Firebird, embodying the spirit of adventure and vivacity. Ernestine's life was touched by both joy and sorrow as she was predeceased by many beloved family members, including Valeria Edwards, Patricia Speight, Doris Ann Speight, Jennifer Dawson, Tarrie Ward, Lonice Barnes, Connie Winstead, Kenneth Ward, Johnny Speight, Leon Speight, and Collis Edwards. Her legacy, however, endures in the hearts she touched and the community she nurtured. A celebration of Ernestine's life will take place on June 6, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the New Hope Free Will Baptist Church, located at 754 11th Street, SE; Washington, DC.
