Ernest James, Sr.

Ernest James, a cherished pillar of the community, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on September 18, 2026. Born on May 13, 1947, in Lumber City, Georgia, Ernest was the beloved son of the late Evege and Louise James.
Ernest graduated from Wheeler Training School in 1966, embarking on a journey that would lead him to serve his country with honor. From 1967 to 1969, he proudly wore the uniform of the United States Army, reaching the rank of Specialist Four E4 while stationed in Vietnam. His exemplary service was recognized with the Army's Bronze Star Medal.
After his military service, Ernest returned home and served as a deacon as well as being on the deacon board and in the choir at St. Paul Baptist Church. Ernest embraced a career as a truck driver, committing decades to his work to provide for his family until his retirement. His dedication to his profession was only surpassed by his devotion to his family. On May 26, 1972, Ernest married the love of his life, Ernestine. Together, they built a life filled with love, nurturing five beautiful children and creating a legacy that spans generations.
Ernest leaves behind his beloved wife of 54 years, Ernestine James, and their children: Eric(April) McRae; Cynthia (Kenneth) Edwards; Ernest(Elaine) James; Ernie(Tracey) James; and Jeffery(Shamekia) James.
In addition to his immediate family, Ernest is survived by his sister-in-law Mary Lois James; his brother Willie "Bill" (Evelyn) James; his sister Nellie Jones; brother John Russel (Celestine) James. Sister- in- law's Glenda Montgomery and Virginia (Horace) Covin, and Vollie Smith and Brother-in-law Willie ‘Bill” McRae. His presence will be profoundly missed by his grandchildren: Ernest James, Erica McRae, Jasmine Lewis, Ronnie James, Ashley Crawford, Alex Barajas, Eric McRae, Kyla James, Chelsea James, Rebekah James, Katelyn James, Jeffery James, NyQyshia Shatteen and Nychovia Morell. He was also the proud grandfather to 12 great-grandchildren.
Ernest was predeceased by his parents, his sister Sharon, and his brother Evege James Jr. Whose memories he cherished deeply throughout his life.
