Ernest Dennis, Jr., a cherished member of the Baton Rouge community, passed away on June 14, 2026, at the age of 88, after a courageous battle with multiple health issues. Born on April 8, 1938, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Ernest was the beloved son of the late Ernest Dennis, Sr. and Viola Vicknair Dennis. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Hazel Dennis, his niece Sherrain LeJander, as well as his great nephew, Kedric Jermaine Dennis, and a great-great nephew. Ernest's legacy is lovingly carried on by his sister, Elouise Dennis Tye, and his niece, Charlotte Gail Dennis. He was a proud great uncle to Latarsha, Shoundrika, and Brittany Dennis, and a cherished great-great uncle to their children. His goddaughter, Crystal Hayes, and his close friends, along with the pastor, officers, and members of New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church, will remember Ernest with fondness and admiration. Ernest's journey in education began at a young age when he attended a facility in Carville, LA, from ages 5 to 12. He continued his early education in the East Baton Rouge public school system, where he completed his high school years. A lifelong learner, Ernest pursued higher education at Louisiana State University, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology in 1974, followed by a Master's Degree in Social Welfare in 1976. His professional life began in the circulation department of The Star newsletter during his high school years, where he later became the secretary to The Star Editor, Stanley Stein. This role opened doors for Ernest, allowing him to meet many influential figures who visited Carville. After completing his education, Ernest dedicated his career to the Louisiana Department of Corrections, working at DCI from 1976 to 1978 and at LCIW from 1978 until his retirement in 2005. Ernest was deeply committed to his faith and community, serving as an active member of the Deacon Board, Trustee Board, and the 700 Club at New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church. Known for his quick wit, meticulous attention to detail, and exceptional record-keeping, Ernest touched the lives of many. His generosity shone through his heartfelt tradition of giving gifts to older church members on Mother's Day and Father's Day in memory of his beloved mother. Ernest's family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Monica Paul-Signater, his devoted caregiver, as well as the hospital and hospice staff who provided him with compassionate care. A service to honor and celebrate Ernest's life will be held on July 3, 2026, at 9:00 AM at New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church, located at 1174 Terrace Street, Baton Rouge, LA 70802.
