Emmy May McLaughlin
October 28, 1955 — March 20, 2026
The world became a little dimmer on March 20, 2026, as we bid farewell to Emmy May McLaughlin, who passed away peacefully surrounded by her beloved family. Born on October 28, 1955, in the welcoming arms of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Emmy was a beacon of love, warmth, and kindness throughout her life.
Emmy was the cherished daughter of Fred and Eva Kohnen, who preceded her in death. She grew up in the close-knit community of Redcliff, AB, where she first began cultivating the values of compassion and community service that would define her life. For over fifty years, Emmy made Medicine Hat her home, creating a legacy of love and service that will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
She was predeceased by her devoted husband, John McLaughlin, with whom she shared countless joyful memories. Together, they built a family that would become Emmy's pride and joy. She is survived by her loving daughters, Kim (Rory) and Amanda (Tanner), who fondly remember her as a guiding light and constant source of support. Her grandson, Grey, was the apple of her eye, and she cherished every moment spent watching him grow.
Emmy's life was a testament to the power of giving. She was a dedicated volunteer with both the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society for many years, tirelessly working to make a difference in the lives of others. Her loving spirit extended to all creatures, great and small, as she was a passionate supporter of the SPCA, reflecting her boundless love for animals.
A woman of many talents, Emmy found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She was an accomplished knitter and cross-stitcher, creating beautiful pieces that warmed the hearts and homes of her family and friends. Emmy was also a remarkable cook and baker, known for her delicious meals that brought loved ones together around the table. Her green thumb was evident in her flourishing garden, and she found peace in tending to her plants, much like she nurtured the relationships in her life.
Emmy's love for her family and friends was immeasurable, and she took great pleasure in spending time with them. Her compassion, kindness, and unwavering dedication to those she held dear will be fondly remembered by her sister, Christa (Dennis), her numerous nieces and nephews, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
In accordance with Emmy's wishes, there will be no formal service. A private ceremony will be held to honor her memory. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the SPCA in Emmy's honor, a cause that was close to her heart, at treasurer@medhatspca.ca.
Emmy May McLaughlin will be forever cherished and lovingly remembered by all those who knew her. Her gentle spirit and enduring love have left an indelible mark on the hearts of many, and she will be profoundly missed. As we gather our memories of Emmy, we find comfort in knowing that her legacy of kindness and generosity will continue to inspire for generations to come.
