Emmett Curtis, a cherished soul with an unyielding passion for life and community, peacefully passed away at home on September 26, 2026. Born on August 24, 1933, in Houston, Texas, Emmett was the beloved son of William Louis Curtis, Sr. and Lillie Rosabelle Curtis. He was preceded in death by his siblings, William Curtis Jr., Theodore Curtis, and Donnella Frazier, and is survived by his devoted niece, Sharon Mills, who carries forward his legacy of love and kindness.
Emmett graduated from Wheatley High School in 1951 and soon after joined the Army Reserves, where he served his country with honor. His professional journey led him to a fulfilling career in Customer Relations at the United States Postal Service. After retiring, Emmett found his true calling as a crossing guard supervisor for the Houston School District, a role he held with pride and dedication until his passing. His commitment to the safety and well-being of the students was a testament to his caring nature and steadfast dedication.
An active and respected member of the Payne Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Emmett received numerous accolades and certificates of appreciation for his unwavering service and contributions. His church community was an essential cornerstone of his life, and it was here that his spirit of generosity and welcoming nature flourished, touching countless lives.
Emmett was a man of many passions, most notably his love for conversation and knowledge sharing. His engaging discussions were not only entertaining but also enlightening, as he had a special way of making everyone feel valued and heard. Emmett's kindness extended beyond words, as he was known for his generosity and the warmth he radiated to all who crossed his path.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the Methodist Hospital System and the compassionate care team, Keri, Dee, and Kristin, for their exceptional support and comfort during Emmett's time in hospice care. Their dedication brought comfort to Emmett and his family during difficult times.
A celebration of Emmett Curtis's remarkable life will be held on October 16, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Payne Chapel AME, located at 2701 Lee Street, Houston, TX 77026. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Emmett’s memory, continuing his legacy of care and compassion.
