Emma Jean Montgomery

Emma Jean Montgomery, a beloved matriarch and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on May 17, 1942, in Lancaster, South Carolina, Emma Jean, affectionately known to many as "Mama Jean," lived a life rich with love, laughter, and unwavering strength.
Mama Jean was the cherished daughter of the late Jimmy Lee and Rosa Montgomery. She was predeceased by her loving brothers, Ernest L. Montgomery, Elton Montgomery, and Jimmy Lee Montgomery Jr.; her beloved daughter, Ruthie Mae Crawford; and her devoted common-law husband, James T. Crawford. Her legacy continues through her extended family, Mitchell Lee McIlwain and daughters (Akiya, Aisha & Alley), and her special friend, Betty M. Campbell, along with her three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who were the lights of her life.
For 35 years, Emma Jean dedicated herself to her work at Leroy Springs Mill in Lancaster, SC, where she was a skilled spinner. Her friends remember her not only for her work ethic but also for her infectious laughter that filled the factory floor and brightened the day of everyone she encountered.
A woman of deep faith and boundless energy, Mama Jean found joy in simple pleasures. Her vegetable garden was a testament to her nurturing spirit, flourishing under her attentive care. She was a talented seamstress, crafting pieces that carried her unique touch. Her heart, however, was most full when she was surrounded by her family, cooking meals that fed both the body and soul, often extending her table to the entire neighborhood.
Emma Jean was known for her quick wit and warm smile, always ready with a joke to lift spirits. Her kindness was legendary, and she had an innate ability to make everyone feel loved and valued. Her life was a testament to resilience and compassion, as she faced her long battle with cancer with courage and grace, always surrounded by the family and friends who adored her.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Atrium Health Pineville for their kindness and compassion, which will forever be a part of their hearts.
A private funeral ceremony will be held on June 27, 2026 to honor Mama Jean's remarkable life. As her family and friends gather to celebrate her memory, they find solace in the love she so generously shared and the legacy she leaves behind.
Mama Jean's spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched. Her laughter, love, and lessons will continue to be cherished by all who knew her. As we say goodbye, we carry her memory forward, grateful for the time we were blessed to share with such a remarkable woman.
