Elvyn Wilkes

Elvyn Wilkes, affectionately known as "Gig," peacefully departed from this world on September 19, 2026, after a courageous battle with illness. Born on May 31, 1938, in the warm embrace of Whiteville, Tennessee, Elvyn lived a life rich in love, service, and dedication to family and faith.
Elvyn was the beloved son of Josephine Wilkes-Neely and Stepfather, Moses Neely Sr., and he was predeceased by his grandparents, David and Pearl Wilkes who raised him and his brother, Robert Earl during their childhood days, his cherished parents, His son, Melvin, his grandson, Darius, both of Tennessee, and three brothers, Robert Earl Wilkes of Rockford, Illinois, and Clifton and Leon Neely, both of Detroit, Michigan. His family was his pride and joy, and he shared a bond with them that transcended time and distance.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 32 years, Naomi McCallister, who stood by his side through life's joys and challenges: Son Stanley Wilkes (Donna) of Virginia, Daughters, Aileen Blacknell of Georgia and Angela Hill of Tennessee. Elvyn was also the proud grandfather of four grandchildren, including his granddaughter Conneshia and grandsons Chad, D'Marius, and Melvin Jr. His brother Moses Jr. of Michigan, sisters Jeannette Neely and Annette Flagg (Michael) of Arizona, and Glenda J. Witherspoon (Jake) of Michigan, along with close relatives Roscoe Woods of Tennessee and Ruby Ray Cross of Illinois, will forever cherish the memories they shared with him.
Elvyn's journey was one of dedication and service. After graduating from Allen-White High School, he served his country in the US Army as a Military Policeman from 1956 to 1957. Following his military service, Elvyn embarked on a fulfilling career with The Chrysler Motor Company in Detroit, Michigan, where he worked diligently for 32 years before retiring in 1998.
A man of deep faith, Elvyn was devoted to God and the practice of prayer and worship. Those who knew him will remember his humble, compassionate, and patient nature. He was the kind of big brother who created cherished memories with his siblings, leaving a lasting legacy of love and kindness. Elvyn was a beautiful soul, whose presence will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Elvyn enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, particularly spending time with his relatives at family reunions, where laughter and love were always abundant. His warmth and generosity of spirit left an indelible mark on everyone he met.
A service to honor and celebrate Elvyn's life will be held on September 24, 2026, at 12:00 PM at Graham Funeral Home Crematory, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake, VA 23434. Elvyn's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered love and support during this time of loss.
Elvyn also leaves behind a large and loving legacy of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Elvyn's name to a charity of your choice, reflecting his spirit of giving and compassion.
