June 29, 1948 — May 4, 2026

It is with profound sadness yet heartfelt gratitude for her life that we announce the peaceful passing of Elsie Rankin on May 4, 2026, at the age of 77. She departed this world surrounded by love and compassion in the comforting embrace of Hospice at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, NY. Elsie was born on June 29, 1948, in Niskayuna, NY, to Robert and Elizabeth Rudesheim, who predeceased her and now welcome her with open arms in the hereafter. Elsie grew up in a home filled with love and faith, graduating from Mohonasen High School in Schenectady, NY, in 1966, a place where she built enduring friendships and cherished memories. Throughout her life, Elsie dedicated herself to nurturing and caring for others. A devoted homemaker, she opened her heart and home to countless children as a foster parent alongside her beloved husband, Peter Rankin. Their love and generosity knew no bounds, and through their journey, they adopted three children, forever expanding their family with love. Elsie was a steadfast servant of God, whose unwavering faith was a beacon of hope and strength to all who knew her. Even in the face of illness, including her courageous battle with breast cancer, she never wavered in her devotion. Her faith was her guiding light, and she embraced the promise of eternal peace with her heavenly Father. As a cherished member of the Jesus Light of the World Church in Scotia, NY, Elsie's spirit of kindness and selflessness touched everyone she encountered. She was always praying for those around her, offering a listening ear and a comforting presence. Her character was defined by her ability to put others before herself, a testament to her loving and generous nature. Elsie's love for life's simple pleasures was evident in her delight in watching the birds at the feeders on her patio—especially the vibrant hummingbirds and red cardinals. Her joy in piecing together puzzles was a reflection of her patience and attention to detail, with many of her completed works gracing the walls of her home. Elsie leaves behind a loving family who will continue to honor her legacy of love and faith: her devoted husband, Peter Rankin; her cherished daughter Laurie Rankin of Farmington, NH; her sons Jesse Rankin and Nathaniel Rankin, both of Troy, NY; her dear sister Roberta Bickford and husband Charles of West Lebanon, ME; her treasured grandchildren Brock Welch of Farmington, NH, Mikayla Schoonmaker of Scotia, NY, and Brittney Rust of Great Barrington, MA. Elsie reunites in heaven with her daughter Lisa Schoonmaker and son William Rankin, carrying forward the bond of family and love. A service to celebrate Elsie's life will be held on May 8, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Park Cemetery, located on Sacandaga Rd. in Scotia, NY. The family extends their deepest gratitude to Community Hospice and the St. Peter's Hospital Hospice Unit for their exceptional care and support during Elsie's final days. In honoring Elsie's life, we are reminded of her unwavering faith, her boundless love for others, and the legacy of compassion she leaves behind. She will be missed dearly but remembered with love by all whose lives she touched. May her soul rest in eternal peace, embraced by the love she so richly shared.
