North Little Rock, Arkansas - It is with heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Elsie Jean Sykes, fondly known as "Madea," on June 18, 2026. Born on August 9, 1933, in North Little Rock, Arkansas, she graced this world with her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love for 92 beautiful years.
Elsie Jean Sykes was the beloved daughter of Ella and Lee Andrew Sykes, who instilled in her the values of faith, family, and community. Raised in a household filled with love alongside 11 siblings, she learned the essential tenets of nurturing and caring for those around her. Her heavenly reunion includes her cherished parents, siblings, and beloved daughter, Terri Dickerson.
Madea's educational journey began in the North Little Rock public schools, culminating in her graduation from Scipio A. High School in 1951. She pursued her passion for education at Shorter College, earning an Associate of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Arkansas Baptist College. Her dedication to learning and teaching inspired countless lives, particularly during her tenure at Philander Smith College, now Philander Smith University, where she served as a librarian and office assistant in the admissions office.
Her professional endeavors extended beyond the halls of academia. Madea enjoyed a vibrant career in retail, where she formed enduring friendships with colleagues and customers alike. Her generous spirit and genuine interest in people were evident in all her interactions.
A devoted member of King Solomon Baptist Church, Madea embraced her faith with zeal, attending Bible study regularly until her health no longer permitted. Her commitment to her spiritual community was as steadfast as her devotion to her family. She leaves behind her loving children: sons John Sykes of North Little Rock, AR, Mark (Denise) Dickerson of Prairie Village, KS, and daughter Tami Dickerson of North Little Rock, AR. Her legacy continues through her three grandchildren Antwon (Vida), Anjolic and KC. Five great-grandchildren, DJ, Madison, DeKylan, DeNyla and Daylen. Two great-great grandchildren, Ahkari and Ky’lani. And all her nieces and nephews, each a testament to her enduring love and influence.
Known for her culinary talents, Madea's kitchen was a haven of delectable aromas and flavors. Her pound cakes, among other dishes, were legendary, and her love for sewing and reading, especially her Bible, brought her immense joy and tranquility. Her life was a tapestry of love, crafted with the threads of kindness, resilience, and boundless generosity.
The family of Elsie Jean Sykes extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has offered their support, prayers, and kindness during this difficult time. Special thanks are given to UAMS and Life Touch Hospice Care for their compassionate care.
A celebration of Madea's life will be held on June 27, 2026, at 11:00 AM at King Solomon Baptist Church, located at 1305 Pine Street, North Little Rock, Arkansas. As we gather to honor her memory, let us carry forward her legacy of love and service, cherishing the indelible mark she has left on our hearts.
