Elouise McCray

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Elouise McCray, a beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend, who departed this earthly life on April 23, 2026, at the age of 83. Elouise passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by the warmth of her family and the love she so generously gave throughout her life.
Born on February 9, 1943, in the close-knit community of Mayesville, South Carolina, Elouise was the cherished daughter of Allen and Lou Ida Mitchell. She grew up in a vibrant household, learning the values of kindness and compassion that would guide her throughout her life. She was predeceased by her siblings, Romeo Mitchell, Edith Rolls, Annie Loucille Victoria Moore, Allen Mitchell, Jr., Addie Mae Mitchell, Inell Champagne, William T. Mitchell, and Hansome Mitchell, whose memories she held dear.
On September 9, 1959, Elouise married the love of her life, Willie A. McCray, in Sumter, South Carolina. Together, they shared 66 wonderful years of marriage, marked by unwavering love and a commitment to family. Elouise and Willie were blessed with six children: Wendale Tubbs, Willie McCray, Jr., Curtis McCray, O'Neal (Jamel) McCray, Antonio McCray, and Sherita (Edward) McCray. Her nurturing spirit extended to her beloved grandchildren, Jo'Hareshea Gibbs (Angie), Tracy Bunting, Jr (TJ), Nikos McCray, and Rayshad Scott, who were a constant source of joy and pride.
Affectionately known for her culinary skills, Elouise's sweet potato pies were a hallmark of family gatherings, bringing smiles to countless faces. She possessed a green thumb that was evident in her flourishing garden, and she found solace in the simple pleasure of tending to her plants. Her favorite soap operas provided moments of relaxation, while her true passion lay in caring for others. Elouise had an extraordinary gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued, her kindness and generosity touching countless lives.
Her professional journey included dedicated service in housekeeping at Whitaker Hospital and later at Riverside Hospital, from which she retired in 2005. Elouise's work ethic and attention to detail were admired by her colleagues and appreciated by all those she served.
As a devoted member of Ivy Baptist Church for over 50 years, Elouise's faith was a guiding light. She found joy in her church community and was a source of support and inspiration to her fellow parishioners.
Elouise leaves behind a legacy of love, survived by her devoted husband, Willie A. McCray, her children, grandchildren, and her dear sister, Johnnie Mae Mitchell. Her memory will forever be cherished by those who knew her.
A celebration of Elouise's life will be held on May 2, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Ivy Baptist Church, located at 50 Maple Ave, Newport News, VA 23607. Family and friends are invited to gather to honor a remarkable woman whose life was a testament to love, family, and faith.
