Ella Mae Torling

Ella Mae Torling, a cherished soul who brightened every room she walked into with her love and laughter, peacefully departed this world on July 26, 2026, at St. Joseph's Hospital. She left us after a brief yet courageous battle with pneumonia and sepsis. Born on February 21, 1943, in Bull Moose, North Dakota, Ella brought warmth and vibrancy into the lives of those around her from her earliest days. Ella was the beloved daughter of William and Edna Wagner, who predeceased her, along with her siblings James Wagner, William Wagner, Millie Hendricks, and Don Nerby. Her devoted husband, Charles 'Chuck' Torling, whom she married on December 26, 1959, also preceded her in death, as did her daughter, Kimberly Spencer, and son-in-law, John Bradley. Despite these profound losses, Ella remained a beacon of strength and compassion for her family. She is survived by her dear sister Adeline Krapu and her loving children: William (Debbie) Torling, Roxanne Bradley, Charles 'Chuck' (Sheila) Torling, and Deborah (Scott) Yee. Ella's legacy of love and nurturing spirit continues through her 19 grandchildren, including Tara Sarmiento, Zachary Sarmiento, Creg (Kelly) Sarmiento, Tiffany (Nicholas) Miller, Charles Sarmiento, Michael Sarmiento, Barbara Nlemba, Amy (Derrick) Victor, Brandy (David) Martin, Christie Hare, Jason Hare, Zak Fricke, Jacob Fricke, Greg Eckstrom, Josh Bradley, Johnny Bradley, Elizabeth Yee, Griffen Yee, and Brandon (Elizabeth) Torling, as well as her 42 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Ella's life was a testament to creativity and kindness. She had a deep passion for crafts, particularly sewing, and lovingly created afghans and quilts for each of her descendants. Her affinity for music, animals, birds, and plants was renowned, and every creature she met seemed to adore her. Her home was a sanctuary filled with love, laughter, and the vibrant life of countless animals and plants. Known for her loving, yet sassy nature, Ella was never afraid to express her thoughts but did so without judgment. She was a cheerleader for everyone, offering support and love even when pointing out errors. Her honesty was always coupled with care, making sure those around her knew they were valued and loved. Ella's best friend, Elaine Starks, shared a beautiful 64-year friendship with her, standing as a testament to Ella's ability to forge deep, lasting connections. Her generous spirit led her to "adopt" many more children and grandchildren throughout her life, expanding her family beyond the ties of blood. Her family invites all who knew her to a service celebrating her remarkable life on August 2, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Laird's Funeral Home, located at 310 South State Street, Elgin, IL 60123. In honoring Ella's love for all things green, the family kindly requests that plants be sent in lieu of flowers.
