Ella Mae Cunningham

Ella Mae Cunningham, a cherished matriarch whose warmth, humor, and loving spirit touched generations of family and friends, peacefully departed this life on August 17, 2026. Born on September 23, 1934, in Darlington, South Carolina, Ella was the beloved daughter of Sylvester and Sarah Boston. She was educated in the Philadelphia Public School System and went on to dedicate more than 30 years of service to the City of Philadelphia, where her commitment and contributions earned her numerous accolades. Ella was a devoted member of All Saints’ Episcopal Church for more than 15 years. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she had a special gift for making others feel welcome. Known for her warmth and wonderful sense of humor, Ella was also a gifted storyteller who could bring people together through the stories she shared. She found great joy in traveling with those she loved and in tending to her garden. Her love of plants and flowers flourished there, creating a beautiful reflection of the care and attention she so freely gave to the people in her life. Ella was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward Cunningham; her son, George Holcombe; and her brothers, Lavern and Sylvester Jr. (“Bussy”). She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Joanne and Diane; her grandchildren, Steven, Stephanie, Shaun, Jared, Jordan, George, and Benny; and her ten beloved great-grandchildren. She will also be lovingly remembered by her siblings, Lucille and Raymond, along with her many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends. Ella Mae Cunningham lived a life marked by faith, resilience, laughter, and love. Her welcoming spirit, memorable stories, devotion to family, and the love she so generously shared will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Though she will be deeply missed, the beautiful legacy she created through her family and the lives she touched will continue for generations to come.
