In Loving Memory
Elizabeth O'Keefe
July 16, 1940 — March 27, 2026
It is with heavy hearts, yet profound gratitude for a life well-lived, that we announce the passing of Elizabeth O'Keefe, who left this world peacefully on March 27, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on July 16, 1940, in the picturesque town of Middleton-in-Teesdale, County Durham, England, Elizabeth was the cherished youngest daughter of Sidney James (Sid/Paddy) O'Keefe and Elizabeth (Bessie) Nattress O'Keefe.
Elizabeth's journey through life was as varied and colorful as the Durham Dales she adored. From an early age, she was spirited and fearless. Leaving school at 14, a common practice after WWII, to work at Shedden's racing stables in Boston Spa, Yorkshire. Her love of, and talent with horses, especially wild fell ponies, was apparent and she carried this passion throughout her life.
At the tender age of 19, Elizabeth married Harry Vipond (Vipe) Temple, embracing the joys of farm life in Teesdale. She found great pleasure in caring for orphan lambs, a testament to her nurturing spirit. Her adventurous heart then led her to the vibrant city of London, where she followed her sister Dorothy into the world of fashion modelling, where she met and married Viktor Ballér, the father of daughter, Viktoria.
Elizabeth's adventurous spirit (some may have called her a Hippie) lead her to leave England with her toddler, to run a restaurant in Montego Bay, Jamaica for a few years, work in a restaurant on Penn State's campus and then live in Hermosa Beach, southern California.
Life took a transformative turn in 1987 when she embraced sobriety with unwavering determination. Her commitment to personal growth propelled her into a new calling as a qualified counsellor, where she dedicated herself to helping countless individuals on their path to recovery. Her involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous spanned over 36 years, during which she warmly welcomed newcomers and offered her guidance as a sponsor, leaving an indelible impact on many lives.
Her love for travel was ignited by visits to her beloved daughter Viktoria, her son-in-law Michael J. Lawson, and her granddaughter Grace Sydney Mouw (née Lawson) in the United States. These cherished road trips were a source of joy and adventure, creating memories that will forever be treasured.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents, Sid and Bessie O'Keefe, and her beloved sisters, Joan Sams and Dorothy Clark. She is survived by her devoted daughter Viktoria and her family, Mike & Grace, as well as her niece Anne Vail and husband Graham, nephew Michael T. Clark and wife Beatrix and their children Jessica and Oliver, and nephew Nicolas Clark and his children Mila and Ben.
Those who knew Elizabeth will remember her as a well-read, witty, and compassionate woman. Her quick wit, paired with her empathetic nature, ensured that her humor never came at the expense of others. In her later years, dementia softened her edges, allowing her humor and warmth to shine through even more brightly.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Haven Care Home in Telscombe Cliffs, East Sussex, for their devoted care during Elizabeth's final weeks. She often spoke fondly of the kind staff and the room with views of the South Downs, which reminded her of her beloved Durham Dales.
Elizabeth O'Keefe's legacy is one of resilience, kindness, and an unwavering love for her family and community. She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
