Elizabeth Mima Pollitt Kenney

January 30, 1925 — January 17, 2025

It is with a profound sense of loss and a deep gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Elizabeth Mima Pollitt Kenney on January 17, 2025, just shy of her 100th birthday. Born on January 30, 1925, in Staten Island, New York, Elizabeth, fondly known as Betty, graced the world with her intelligence, warmth, and enduring spirit. The daughter of Mima and Basil Pollitt, Betty was a beacon of light to all who knew her. Preceded in death by her beloved brothers, Daniel and Basil, and her cherished husband, Navy Commander Francis Vincent Kenney, with whom she shared a lifetime of love after eloping in Bremerton, WA, in 1950. Their union, which spanned nearly six decades, was a testament to their unwavering love and commitment. A proud alumna of Vassar College, Betty graduated with the class of 1945, completing her studies six months ahead of schedule—a testament to her razor-sharp mind and passion for education. She embarked on a pioneering career at IBM, breaking barriers for women in the workforce and paving the way for future generations. Betty's life was richly intertwined with her devotion to her family. Her eight children were the center of her world—Shannon, Terry, Timothy, Laura, and Kevin survive her, while Mark, Elizabeth, and Caroline have predeceased her. Her legacy extends through her 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, each of whom carries forward a piece of her remarkable spirit. A woman of many interests, Betty found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Her home was always open, a sanctuary filled with the laughter of friends and the warmth of family. She adored antiquing with her dear friends, was an avid bridge player, and cherished the companionship of her many cats. Betty's ability to create a welcoming and loving environment was matched only by her indomitable determination, grace, and a touch of humor that carried her through life's challenges with optimism. Betty's legacy is one of strength, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to those she loved. Her presence in our lives was a gift, and while she is no longer with us, the memories she created will forever remain in our hearts. A private family service will be held to honor Betty's extraordinary life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in her memory, reflecting her lifelong belief in the power of education and community. Betty will be dearly missed, but her spirit will live on in the countless lives she touched. She leaves behind a world made better by her presence and a family eternally grateful for her love.
