It is with profound sadness and yet deep gratitude for a life beautifully lived that we announce the passing of Elizabeth M. McCoy, a beloved mother, grandmother, educator, and friend. Elizabeth passed away peacefully on April 20, 2026, at the age of 83. Her presence will be missed by all who knew her, but her spirit and legacy will continue to inspire and guide us. Born on November 4, 1942, in Loudon County, Virginia, Elizabeth was the cherished daughter of Oma and Esker Mills. She grew up in a household rich in love and values that would shape her into the generous and cultured woman we remember today. Elizabeth was predeceased by her loving husband, Francis (Frank) McCoy, with whom she shared a lifetime of love, laughter, and companionship. Together, they created a beautiful family and a welcoming home, known for its warmth and acceptance. Elizabeth is survived by her devoted children, Shelley Griffith, Mark Griffith, Karen Griffith, Seth Griffith, Beth McCoy, James McCoy and her nephews Matt Mills and Daniel Mills. All of whom were her pride and joy. She was a loving grandmother to sixteen grandchildren, each of whom brought endless delight to her life. A woman of intellect and passion, Elizabeth pursued her education with dedication and excellence. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in French from the University of Maryland and furthered her studies by earning a master's in education from the College of William and Mary. Her passion for languages led her to a distinguished career as a foreign language teacher for over 40 years. Her commitment to education and her students earned her numerous accolades, including recognition in the prestigious Who's Who of American Teachers. Beyond her professional achievements, Elizabeth was a woman of action and compassion. She volunteered with Operation Smile, traveling to Colombia to lend her skills and her heart to those in need. Her contributions to the world extended far beyond the classroom, touching lives across borders. Elizabeth's love for classical music, playing the piano, and singing in the church choir filled her life with harmony and joy. Her graceful dancing, adventurous spirit for travel, and admiration for French culture enriched her life and those around her. She was a woman of elegance, with a heart open to the world's beauty and diversity. Elizabeth's generous spirit and loving nature were the cornerstones of her character. She embraced everyone with kindness and acceptance, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her cultured demeanor and her unwavering support for her family and community are her lasting legacy. As we say goodbye to Elizabeth, we remember her not just for the life she lived, but for the love she gave and the lessons she imparted. Her life was a testament to the power of education, the beauty of music, and the importance of family. A celebration of Elizabeth's life will be held at Smith and Williams Funeral Home. Doors open for a visitation and gathering with friends and family at 1:00pm on Sunday May 10th. A memorial service will follow at 3:00pm to honor her and the indelible mark she left on our hearts. A reception will be held after with hors d oeuvres and refreshments. All are invited. Donations can be made to Operation Smile or the Virginia Beach SPCA. Elizabeth M. McCoy was a beacon of light and love in our lives, and while she may no longer walk among us, her spirit will forever guide us.
