July 17, 1939 — June 5, 2026

Elizabeth L. Evans, affectionately known as Betty or Itty, peacefully gained her eternal wings on June 5, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on July 17, 1939, to the late Margaret McKethan and Henry Poland, Elizabeth was the cherished seventh child in a bustling family of ten siblings. She grew up in the heart of Philadelphia, where she forged a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to her family and community. Betty's journey of love began early in her life when she married James C. Anthony, who has since passed on. Later, she met and married Ernest Evans, the love of her life, with whom she shared countless cherished memories. Together, they built a family rich in love and laughter, raising five children: Michele Moore (Andre), Margaret R. Williams (Michael), James C. Poland (Karen), Frank M. Poland, and Brian K. Anthony. Her legacy continues through a multitude of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, an enduring testament to her nurturing spirit. Betty's professional career was as varied as it was distinguished. She was a CPA who dedicated 34 years of service to the City of Philadelphia. Her career was marked by her role as secretary to the Grand Masters for an impressive 57 years, a travel agent, and a licensed insurance agent. She also contributed her talents as a secretary to the National Freedom Day Association, where she was honored with an award for Outstanding Community Service. Betty's dedication to her profession and community reflected her tireless spirit and commitment to making a difference in the lives of those around her. Her early education took place at West Philadelphia High School, followed by studies at Wharton University. However, it was her wisdom, warmth, and humor that truly educated and inspired those who had the privilege of knowing her. Elizabeth was a woman of faith, raised in the family church, Mount Hebron Baptist Church, and later a member of Sharon Baptist, Christian Union, and finally, Tabernacle Harvest Church. Her spiritual journey guided her life and served as a beacon for her family and community. Betty's hobbies and interests were as diverse as her talents. She was renowned for her culinary skills, delighting all with her cooking, especially her pound cakes, sweet potato pies, and sweet potato pudding/soufflé. Her generosity was evident in her willingness to prepare taxes for next to nothing and her joy in volunteering her time at senior homes to offer free tax assistance. She was an avid supporter of the Woodland Giants Baseball team, keeping score with her characteristic dedication and enthusiasm. Moreover, her love for delivering food to those in need exemplified her selfless spirit. Her quick wit, warm smile, and infectious laughter brightened the lives of everyone she met. Betty's ability to make others feel welcomed and valued was a testament to her kind heart and generous spirit. Her life was a beautiful tapestry woven with truthfulness, strength, determination, and honor. She served her roles as wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and more with dignity and grace. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Elizabeth Poland, her sister Dorothy Ruffin, and five brothers who left this world too soon. She is survived by her devoted husband, Ernest Evans, her five children and their spouses, her sister Eleanor Jones, her brothers Charles Poland and Leslie Poland, and a loving circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends. A service celebrating Elizabeth's remarkable life will be held on June 13, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Mount Hebron Baptist Church, located at 1415-19 Wharton Street, Philadelphia, PA 19146. The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all who have shown kindness, concern, and love during this difficult time.
