In Loving Memory

Eleanor Regina (McGettigan) Gregory
August 1, 1933 — May 4, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Eleanor Regina (McGettigan) Gregory on May 4, 2026, at the age of 92. Eleanor, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, departed this world at her home in the loving embrace of her family after a courageous battle with dementia.
Born on August 1, 1933, in Philadelphia, PA, Eleanor was the cherished daughter of Kathryn M. Murray and Joseph E. McGettigan. Her early years were marked by resilience, having grown up in the Catholic Home for Destitute Children following the untimely loss of her mother. Eleanor thrived despite these challenges, graduating from Saint Hubert's Catholic High School for Girls in Philadelphia, PA. Displaying an insatiable thirst for learning, she later pursued higher education at Burlington County College, earning her degree at the remarkable age of 54.
Eleanor's professional journey spanned several decades, during which she excelled as an Executive Assistant and Corporate Secretary. Her dedication and meticulous attention to detail were evident during her 25-year tenure at Oki Data, Mount Laurel, NJ, as well as her roles at Consarc in Westhampton, NJ, and McMillan Publishing Company in Riverside, NJ.
Beyond her career, Eleanor was a woman of diverse interests and boundless curiosity. Her love for travel took her across Europe, often in the delightful company of her siblings and friends. She reveled in the beauty of her ancestral Ireland, the charm of London and Paris, the history of Rome and Venice, and the stunning landscapes of Lucerne, Switzerland.
Eleanor was an avid reader, a lover of poetry, and possessed the remarkable ability to recite long poems from memory, including the Hail Mary in French. Her sense of humor was infectious, bringing laughter to those around her. Even at 92, her striking dark brown hair, untouched by grey, was a testament to her vibrant spirit.
Eleanor was a devoted sports enthusiast, cheering passionately for Philadelphia's baseball and hockey teams, with a particular fondness for the Eagles. Her love for the arts drew her to the theaters and opera houses of New York City and Philadelphia, where she enjoyed countless performances alongside her family and friends.
Family was the cornerstone of Eleanor's life. She was predeceased by her parents, Kathryn and Joseph McGettigan; siblings Joseph McGettigan, James McGettigan, Kathleen (Kate) Lowery, and Delores (Dee) Dolan; her daughter Brenda Lee Elliott; and granddaughter Caitlin Rose-Mae Cook. She is survived by her beloved children, Dave (Helen) Gregory, Eileen (Barry) Cook, Carol (Roger) Randall, and Brian (Lori) Gregory. Eleanor's legacy extends to her dear sister, Mary Regina (Jeannie) O'Donnel, her "other daughter" Karen Eachus, and her cherished caregiver and friend, Gifty.
Eleanor's family tree continues to flourish with 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way. She delighted in their accomplishments, taking them for ice cream outings and attending their sports events, plays, and milestones.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Affinity Hospice for their compassionate support and to the angel who brought sweet music to Eleanor in her final days. Most of all, they express their deepest appreciation to Gifty, whose love, care, and wisdom enriched Eleanor's life for four and a half precious years.
Eleanor's indomitable spirit, love of life, and devotion to family will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. As we celebrate her life, we find solace in the memories she leaves behind—a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience.
