Eleanor Regina (McGettigan) Gregory
August 1, 1933 — May 4, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound appreciation for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Eleanor Regina (McGettigan) Gregory on May 4, 2026, at the age of 92. Eleanor, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, peacefully left this world at her home, surrounded by love, after a courageous battle with dementia.
Born on August 1, 1933, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Eleanor was the beloved daughter of Kathryn M. Murray and Joseph E. McGettigan. She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings: Joseph McGettigan, James McGettigan, Kathleen (Kate) Lowery, Delores (Dee) Dolan, her daughter Brenda Lee Elliott, and her granddaughter Caitlin Rose-Mae Cook. Eleanor is survived by her devoted children: Dave (Helen) Gregory, Eileen (Barry) Cook, Carol (Roger) Randall, and Brian (Lori) Gregory. She leaves behind a legacy in her "little sister", Mary Regina (Jeannie) O'Donnell, 17 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren, with another eagerly anticipated arrival.
Eleanor's early years were shaped by resilience and determination. After losing her mother at a young age, she grew up in the Catholic Home for Destitute Children. Despite these challenges, she graduated from Saint Hubert's Catholic High School for Girls in Philadelphia, PA, and continued her education later in life, earning a degree from Burlington County College at the age of 54. Her lifelong love of learning was an inspiration to her loved ones.
Eleanor spent many years as an Executive Assistant and Corporate Secretary for various businesses, including Oki Data in Mount Laurel, NJ, Consarc in Westhampton NJ, and McMillan Publishing Company in Riverside, NJ. Her career was marked by dedication, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Eleanor's zest for life and indomitable spirit were evident in her many interests. A passionate traveler, she explored the wonders of Europe, visiting beloved destinations such as Ireland, London, Paris, Germany, Rome, Venice, and Tivoli, Italy, and Lucerne, Switzerland, often accompanied by her siblings, friends, and cherished companions. Her love for the arts drew her to New York City and Philadelphia, where she delighted in plays and operas. An avid sports enthusiast, Eleanor was a loyal fan of Philadelphia's baseball and hockey teams, with a special fondness for the Eagles.
Those who knew Eleanor will remember her independence, her great sense of humor, and her ability to make others laugh. Her love for literature and poetry was profound, and she could recite long poems from memory, even saying the Hail Mary in French. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and she cherished taking them out for ice cream and cheering them on in their various endeavors.
Eleanor's remarkable life was characterized by her tenacity, intelligence, and humor. Amazingly, she retained her natural dark brown hair without a trace of gray well into her nineties. Her love for crossword puzzles, flowers, and her unwavering support for those she loved will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff at Affinity Hospice for their compassionate care and to the angel who played sweet music to bring joy to Eleanor's days. Special thanks are reserved for her "other daughter" Karen Eachus, her close friend Cathy, and her devoted caregiver and friend, Gifty, who showered Eleanor with love, laughter, and wisdom for four and a half years, giving the family precious quality time with their beloved matriarch.
Eleanor Regina (McGettigan) Gregory leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her memory will be cherished, and her spirit will forever be a guiding light for her family and friends.
