Eleanor Mae Thompson
March 15, 1948 — December 20, 2025
Eleanor Mae Thompson, a beacon of warmth and kindness, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on March 15, 1948, in Austin, Texas, Eleanor was the cherished daughter of James and Dorothy Thompson. Her early years in Austin were filled with the love and support of her family, including her brother William, who predeceased her, and her beloved sister, Patricia Davis, who survives her.
A proud alumna of the University of Texas at Austin, Eleanor graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. It was in that same year that she married the love of her life, Robert Thompson. Together, they shared a remarkable journey of 52 years, filled with laughter, adventure, and an unwavering partnership, until Robert's passing.
Eleanor dedicated her professional life to nurturing the minds and hearts of young students as an elementary school teacher at Westlake Elementary. Her career spanned 30 years, during which she inspired countless children with her patience, creativity, and infectious enthusiasm for learning. Eleanor retired in 2008, leaving behind a legacy of education and inspiration.
Her commitment to community and fellowship was evident in her active involvement with the First Baptist Church, the Austin Garden Club, and the Retired Teachers Association. Eleanor’s love for gardening was not just a hobby but a testament to her nurturing spirit. Her garden was her sanctuary, a place where she found joy and tranquility. Her watercolor paintings reflected her appreciation for nature’s beauty, and her pies were a staple at every church social, each one a delicious work of art that brought people together.
Eleanor’s warm smile and generous spirit were her trademarks. She had an uncanny ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued, a gift that extended beyond her family to everyone she met. Her home was always open, a place of comfort and love, where her children, Michael Thompson and his wife Sarah, and Karen Mitchell and her husband David, learned the true meaning of family.
Eleanor was the proud grandmother of five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her legacy lives on in their laughter and the values she instilled in them. Her family was her greatest joy, and she cherished every moment spent with them.
A memorial service to honor Eleanor’s life will be held on January 5, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church, located at 901 Trinity St, Austin, TX 78701.
