Elder James Alfred Presberry

April 2, 1948 — September 16, 2026

Elder James Alfred Presberry, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and devoted servant to his faith, passed away peacefully at home on September 16, 2026, surrounded by the love and comfort of family. Born on April 2, 1948, in Hayti, Missouri, James lived a life marked by dedication, compassion, and unwavering faith. James was the cherished son of the late Cuba and Rosie Mae Presberry, and he carried their teachings and values throughout his life. He shared a deep bond with his siblings, including those who predeceased him: Clarence, Rev. Elijah, Burnest, and Rachael. His surviving siblings—Pastor Harvey, Darlene, Rev. Joseph, Isiah, and Rev. Robert—will forever hold him in their hearts. On October 28, 1972, James married the love of his life, the late Jackie Whitmore. Their union was blessed with a beautiful family. James is survived by his children, Alfrieda Whitmore, Regina Gill-Pace and her husband Joseph Pace, Jenean Presberry, and Elder Jason Presberry and his wife Passionique. He also leaves behind his cherished bonus daughter, Chuncey Koonce. James's legacy continues through his nine grandchildren: Misheal Butts, Steve Gill, Akaya Presberry, Gabrielle Gill-DeJarnett, Robert Pleasure, Janene Washington and her husband Corey Washington, Blessing Bracie, Kenneth-Jace Presberry, and Marcus Whitmore. Each of them carries a piece of his spirit and continues his journey of love and kindness. An active member of the East Grand Boulevard Church of God in Christ, James served under the leadership of the late Bishop Elton Allen Lawrence. His faith was the cornerstone of his life, and he was a guiding light to many in his community. James was predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife Jackie, his son Gyshawn Presberry, and several siblings. Though they are no longer with us, their memories are carried forward by those who knew and loved them. A celebration of James's life will be held on September 26, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the East Grand Boulevard Church of God in Christ, located at 1432 East Grand, Detroit, MI 48211. Family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched are invited to join in honoring his remarkable journey. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in James's memory to a charity of your choice, keeping his spirit of generosity alive. Elder James Alfred Presberry will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his dedication to his family, and his gentle, loving nature. His life was a testament to the power of kindness and faith, and he leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
