Elder Henry C. Tappin, a devoted servant of the Lord, a loving family man, and a cherished friend to many, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on January 26, 1942, in Little Rock, Arkansas, Henry was the beloved son of the late William Tappin, Sr. and Sadie Johnson Tappin. He was predeceased by his dear parents, his brother William Tappin, Jr., and his sister Betty Pertillar. Henry's journey began in Arkansas, but he found his heart's calling in New Haven, Connecticut, where he dedicated his life to family, faith, and community. He shared 41 beautiful years of marriage with the late Barbara Tappin, with whom he had one son, Derrick Tappin. Together, Henry and Barbara ran a successful traveling clothing boutique business, specializing in hats and fashion designs that catered to their church community. Their business was not only a testament to their entrepreneurial spirit but also an extension of their ministry, spreading the Word of God through service. Henry was a proud alumnus of James Hillhouse High School, where he excelled in track and field, often reminiscing about his memorable race against the late Floyd Little, a cherished memory that exemplified his competitive spirit and passion for life. His professional journey led him to Winchester Manufacturing Company, where he began as a laborer, and later, he retired as a Lead Inspector from FMR Manufacturing Company, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues for his dedication and work ethic. A man of profound faith, Henry accepted Christ early in life and devoted himself to the service of the Lord. As a Deacon and Elder at Pitts Chapel Unified Free Will Baptist Church, he ministered with a compassionate heart, touching lives across the United States. His presence was a beacon of hope, and his ministry brought healing and strength to many. Henry was deeply involved in church activities, supporting fundraisers, banquets, and pastoral anniversaries, always working to fortify the church's mission and community. Henry's legacy is carried on by his loving family: his brother, Lee C. Tappin (Bobbie, Angela, Lolanda, Navida); his children, Yvonne Green, Derrick Tappin, Arletta Hines-Hobby (Michael), Timothy Little, and Shree Ricard (Lance); and an abundance of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends. He also leaves cherished memories with his sister in Christ, Margarett (Constance) Tappin Bessette (Dennis), and his beloved godchildren, Martha, Tachema, and Randy, who held special places in his heart. A celebration of Henry’s life and faith will be held on May 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at New Trinity Temple C.O.G.I.C., located at 285 Dixwell Avenue, New Haven, Connecticut 06511.
