Edward Shelton

April 9, 1946 — October 17, 2026

Edward "Eddie" Shelton, cherished husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on April 9, 1946, in Chilhowie, Virginia, Eddie was the beloved son of Willie and Roxie Shelton. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his sisters Marie Keifer, Beulah Vannoy, Elizabeth Blevins, Ruth Shelton, and brothers William Shelton and Frank Shelton. Eddie's life was a testament to love, service, and a profound appreciation for music. He leaves behind his devoted wife of over 57 years, Elaine Shelton, whose partnership was a cornerstone of his life. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Christi Johnson (Don) and Jonathan Shelton (Nikki), who were constant sources of pride and joy for Eddie. He also leaves behind his dear sisters, Velma Sue Wymer and Carol Belefski, who shared countless cherished moments with him. In his early years, Eddie answered the call to serve his country, proudly serving in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968, during which time he was stationed in Germany. Following his military service, he dedicated his professional life to the United States Postal Service, retiring as the Postmaster for Abingdon, Virginia, a role he carried out with integrity and commitment. Eddie's heart, however, belonged to music. A gifted musician, he began singing in church as a teenager and became renowned for his skill on the tuba. His passion for music was boundless, and he generously shared it throughout his life. Whether performing at churches, hospitals, nursing homes, civic groups, weddings, or funerals, Eddie's music brought comfort and joy to countless lives. He served as a Deacon and was an active member of the choir and orchestra at Euclid Avenue Baptist Church, where his faith and community spirit were evident in every note he played and every song he sang. Known for his size and his smile, Eddie was affectionately referred to as a "lovable giant of a man," leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Abingdon Health and Rehab Center for the exceptional care and compassion they provided Eddie in his final days. A special thank you is owed to Caris Hospice for their dedicated support. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Eddie's memory, honoring his generous spirit and dedication to service.
