In Loving Memory

Edward Coates
January 8, 1948 — May 31, 2026
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Edward Coates, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who departed this life on May 31, 2026, after a courageous battle with illness. Born on January 8, 1948, in Washington, DC, Eddie, as he was fondly known, was a beacon of love and laughter to all who knew him.
Eddie was the cherished son of the late Virgil and Alice Coates. He was predeceased by his brothers Richard, Clifton, and Lawrence, and sisters Patoka, Polly, and Loretta. His absence leaves a void in the hearts of his surviving sisters, Deloris Garnes, Barbara Jennings, Harriet (Lawen) Warren, Maxine Mckenzie, and Theresa Marshall. Eddie's legacy is lovingly carried on by his devoted wife of 30 years, Michele Fauntroy Coates, with whom he shared a bond that began in 1977 after his honorable discharge from the military. Their marriage on July 22, 1996, was a testament to their enduring love.
Eddie was a proud father to his children Temora, Delrico, Antwon (Guiselle), Edward Jr. (Tomeeka), Cicely (Marcus), Darron (Ranashia), Aaron (Rushia), Brandon (Bria), and Brion. He was a doting grandfather to 32 grandchildren and a great-grandfather to 5 great-grandchildren, all of whom will remember his warmth and wisdom.
Eddie's life was marked by service and dedication. Educated in DC public schools, he served with distinction in the Vietnam War, earning numerous commendations including the National Defense Service Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. After his honorable discharge in 1977, Eddie transitioned to a commendable career in the federal government and later with Metro Transit, where he was recognized for his dedication to safety.
A man of many interests, Eddie was an avid fisherman, a passion generously supported by his daughter Cicely who gifted him his cherished boat. He spent countless joyful hours on the water, surrounded by family and friends, creating memories that will be treasured forever. Known for his infectious laughter, Eddie was the life of every party, always ready to extend a helping hand or a kind word to those in need. His open heart and home were a sanctuary of joy and generosity.
A celebration of Eddie's life will be held on June 18, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the Light House Baptist Church, located at 3150 Middletown Rd, Waldorf, MD, 20603. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home for their unwavering care and support during Eddie's illness.
As we mourn Eddie's passing, we also celebrate a life well-lived, filled with love, laughter, and a legacy of kindness. He will be profoundly missed but never forgotten, as his spirit lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. Rest in peace, dear Eddie. Your journey has touched us all.
