It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Edsel Cornell Barrow, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Edsel departed this world on October 8, 2026, after a short but courageous battle with lung cancer. He was surrounded by the love and warmth of his family, a testament to the cherished life he led.
Born on June 16, 1950, in Detroit, Michigan, Edsel was the son of the late Mr. DeLeon and Julia Barrow. Growing up in a bustling and vibrant city, Edsel was instilled with values of resilience and a strong community spirit. He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Joe and Larry, his sisters Delores and Judy, and his eldest son, DeLeon. Despite these profound losses, Edsel's spirit remained unbroken, and his heart open.
Edsel's academic journey began at Eastern High School, now known as Martin Luther King Senior High, where he excelled both academically and athletically. A passionate athlete, Edsel ran track and proudly took second place in the State Regionals & East League. However, his true love was basketball, and he played with vigor and dedication, leading his team to numerous victories.
In 1969, Edsel answered the call to serve his country, joining the U.S. Navy. He bravely fought in the Vietnam War and was honored with an Honorable Discharge, as well as the National Defense Award and the Vietnam Service Medal. Upon returning home, Edsel began a long career as a Weatherization Inspector for the City of Detroit and worked as a Security Officer for various companies, dedicating his life to serving and protecting his community.
A man of deep faith, Edsel found peace and purpose through his devotion to the Holy Bible. Under the guidance of Bishop Ellis at Greater Grace Temple, Detroit, he nurtured his spiritual journey, infusing his daily life with the teachings and love of scripture. He was known for sharing biblical wisdom in every conversation, reminding those around him of the ever-present love of God.
Family was the cornerstone of Edsel's life. He cherished every moment spent with his family and found immense joy in their company. He is survived by his son, Jason Barrow, and his cherished grandchildren, Alana, Keishawn, JaDen, Caitlyn, and Caiah Barrow. His beloved sisters Barbara and Patricia, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, will continue to carry his legacy forward. A special mention is made of his niece, Pixie, and his dear friend RT, whose companionship he treasured.
Edsel's love for golf was a source of great joy, a hobby that allowed him to connect with nature and share laughter with friends and family. Those who knew him will remember his unique spirit, his love for sharing the good word, and his unwavering belief that God loves each and every one of us.
