It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Edna Thompson, a beloved daughter, sister, and friend. She departed this life on April 24, 2026, at the age of 60. Edna was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 29, 1966, to the late George Washington Thompson, affectionately known as "Georgia Boy," and Arlena Thompson.
Edna’s life was a testament to kindness, service, and dedication. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Arlena, her brother Gregory Reid, and her sister Arlene Laverne Thompson. She leaves behind cherished memories with her surviving brothers, Wayne Reid and Charles Thompson.
A proud graduate of Washington High School, class of 1984, Edna initially aspired to become a journalist. However, fate led her down a different path. She served with distinction at the Fulton County jail systems from 1988 to 2003, where she began her career as a Deputy Sheriff and later earned the rank of Sergeant. Her years of service were marked by her unwavering commitment to justice and her empathetic approach to those around her.
Edna was an active member of her church under the leadership of Pastor Dier Hopkins. Her faith was a guiding light in her life, and she extended her spiritual commitment through her active participation in numerous organizations. She was a tireless volunteer, always ready to lend a helping hand, offer solid advice, and provide housing to those in need. Her community was her family, and she served with a heart full of love and compassion.
Known for her quick wit and infectious smile, Edna had a way with words that could brighten any room. Her humor, generosity, and selfless nature made her a beacon of light to all who knew her. She was a mentor, a resource advocate, and a friend to many, offering solace and support with a gentle spirit and a warm heart.
Although Edna did not have grandchildren, her legacy of love and service leaves an indelible mark on the hearts of countless individuals she touched throughout her life. Her memory will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her.
A celebration of Edna’s life will be held on May 1, 2026, at 2:30 PM at Gus Thornhill Funeral Home. As we gather to honor her memory, we invite all who knew and loved Edna to join us in celebrating a life well-lived and a spirit that will forever remain in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Edna’s memory to a local charity of your choice, reflecting her generous spirit and lifelong dedication to service.
Edna Thompson will be profoundly missed, but her spirit will live on in the lives she touched and the love she shared. May she rest in eternal peace.
