Edith Marie Tyau, a beacon of kindness and compassion, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on November 18, 1938, in Hawarden, Iowa, she was the cherished daughter of Charles Alfred and Erma Alvina Burkhart.
Edith's life was a testament to dedication and love, both in her professional career and her personal relationships. She graduated from Hawarden High School in 1957 and pursued her passion for nursing at Drake University in Des Moines. Edith completed her RN degree at Broadlawns Polk County Hospital in 1960, embarking on a lifelong journey of care and service.
In 1967, Edith married the love of her life, Howard Y. H. Tyau, on the beautiful island of Oahu. Their marriage was a partnership marked by deep love and mutual respect. Together, they moved to Maui in 1978, where they raised their family and built a life full of cherished memories.
Edith's nursing career began at Maunalani Convalescent Center in Honolulu, followed by a fulfilling tenure at Kauikeolani Children's Hospital. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her professional life as she became a dedicated family day care provider before joining Hale Makua Maui. Edith's career culminated at Kaiser Permanente Wailuku, where she worked until her retirement in 2004, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and excellence in care.
An active member of her community, Edith was involved in numerous clubs and organizations, constantly seeking ways to give back. Her commitment to service was unwavering, and she was a lifetime devoted member of Emanuel Lutheran Church. Edith's faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her actions and inspiring those around her.
Edith had a profound love for the outdoors, finding joy in hiking, swimming, and snorkeling. She was an avid reader, always eager to immerse herself in new worlds through books. Her warmth and generosity touched everyone she met, and she was known as a loyal friend who never hesitated to lend a helping hand.
Edith is survived by her loving children, Christopher (Jodi Hao) Tyau, Brian Tyau, and Heidi (Shane) Phillips. She was a proud grandmother to five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who will forever cherish her memory and the love she bestowed upon them. Edith is now reunited with her beloved husband, Howard, and her grandson, Johnathan Tyau, who predeceased her.
In honor of Edith's memory, the family suggests that donations be made to Emanuel Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice, reflecting Edith's lifelong commitment to helping others.
Edith Marie Tyau's legacy of kindness, love, and service will continue to inspire all who knew her. Though she has departed from this world, her spirit will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. May she rest in peace.
