Born on July 1, 1948, in Halifax County, Gail was a beacon of joy and warmth in the lives of all who knew her. Gail was the beloved daughter of Edward and Thelma Barfield, both of whom predeceased her, along with her cherished sister Virginia "Ginny" Boyd and brother Ronnie Barfield. She is survived by her devoted niece Andrea Bridgers and husband Stewart, along with many extended nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart. Gail embarked on her career with a brief yet memorable stint at the Edgecombe County Animal Shelter, where her love for animals often led her to bring many furry friends home. This undeniable affection for animals was a hallmark of her generous spirit. She dedicated 38 years of her professional life to the telecommunications industry at Carolina Telephone, later known as Sprint. Her unwavering dedication and work ethic were evident in every task she undertook. After her retirement from Sprint, Gail continued to share her talents and kindness through her work at the Tarboro Clinic and QVC, each for five years. A devoted member of the Tarboro Church of God, Gail cherished her church family and held deep admiration for her pastor, Rev. Mike Robbins, and his wife Andrea. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, providing her with comfort and strength. Gail's life was enriched by her love for her precious fur baby, Claire-Monet. Together, they enjoyed countless walks around downtown Tarboro, socializing with friends and sharing smiles. Claire-Monet's presence brought immense joy to Gail's life, whether they were out on the Town Commons or taking long car rides together. In her leisure time, Gail found solace in puzzles and Bible study, activities that reflected her thoughtful and introspective nature. Known affectionately for her honest opinions and "bossiness," Gail's kind heart shone brightly in all her interactions. Her ability to be both candid and compassionate endeared her to many, creating lasting bonds that will be cherished forever. A celebration of Gail's life will be held on June 8, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Edgecombe Memorial Park. In honor of her profound love for animals, donations may be made to the Edgecombe County Animal Shelter in her memory, ensuring her legacy of compassion continues. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff of the 4th floor at ECU Edgecombe Hospital, particularly Jared, Mary, Scott, and Vicki from Palliative Care, for their patience, kindness, and exceptional care. Heartfelt thanks also go to Gentiva Hospice, especially Tanzy, Angela, and Christie, whose encouraging words and kindness were a source of comfort. The staff at the Barclay of Tarboro, along with the many friends Gail made there, will always be remembered for their love and support.
