It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of Edgar Applewhite, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, who peacefully passed away at his home on March 12, 2025, at the age of 93. Edgar's life was a testament to kindness, dedication, and love, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born on July 8, 1931, in Wilson, North Carolina, Edgar was the cherished son of the late Edgar Applewhite and Ella Mae Applewhite. He grew up in a loving household alongside his siblings, Martha Ann Newberry, Kelly Swanson, James, and Nathanial, who remained close throughout their lives, sharing memories and laughter that will be cherished forever.
Edgar was a proud graduate of Noyes Senior High School, where he laid the foundation for a future of learning and service. His thirst for knowledge led him to earn a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, a degree that he would put to great use during his long and fulfilling career as a mechanical engineer with Wilson Public Schools. Among his many professional accomplishments, Edgar was instrumental in leading the design of the 1998 transmission waterway of Wilson, a project that stands as a testament to his skill and dedication.
In his personal life, Edgar was blessed to share over six decades of marriage with his devoted wife, Ella Mae Johnson. Together, they raised four wonderful children: Edgar III, James, Jenny, and Rhonda, who inherited their father’s sense of humor and warmth. Edgar's legacy continues through his ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, each of whom he adored and cherished.
An active and engaged member of his community, Edgar was a pillar of Mount Baptist Church for over 50 years, offering his time and talents in service to others. His commitment extended beyond his church to include the Rotary Club, where he served as President in 2000, and the American Legion, reflecting his deep sense of civic duty. For 32 years, he bravely volunteered as a firefighter, always ready to lend a hand to those in need.
A man of many talents and interests, Edgar was an avid fisherman and hunter, never missing the excitement of opening day. In the tranquility of his garden, he found joy in nurturing his vegetable plants, sharing the bounty with family, friends, and neighbors. His woodworking skills brought joy to his grandchildren, as he crafted furniture with love and care.
Edgar was known far and wide for his quick wit and warm, loving smile. His ability to uplift those around him with a well-timed joke or comforting word was a gift to all who knew him. His kindness and generosity were boundless, touching countless lives with his welcoming spirit and genuine care.
A celebration of Edgar’s life will take place on March 26, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, located at 1800 Martin Luther King Parkway, Wilson, NC 27893. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have joined them in honoring Edgar's memory and celebrating his remarkable life.
