February 25, 1930 — May 29, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Dwane F. Pins, who left this world on May 29, 2026, at the age of 96. Born on February 25, 1930, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Dwane was the cherished son of John M. Pins and Camille M. Pins (Consedine), both of whom preceded him in death. Dwane was a man of remarkable character and unwavering dedication. He was a devoted husband to his beloved Claire G. Pins (Mayer), whom he married in April 1960. Together, they shared a beautiful journey of love and companionship for 48 years until Claire's passing in 2008. Their love story remains a testament to the power of enduring partnership. An exemplary father, Dwane leaves behind his sons, John Pins (Ruth) and Philip Pins (Diana), and his daughter, Betty Jones (Charlie). He was also the proud grandfather of two grandsons, James Kappel and Matthew Pins, who brought immense joy to his later years. Dwane's commitment to education and service to his country were hallmarks of his life. A graduate of Cathedral High School in Sioux Falls in 1948, he pursued higher education at South Dakota State University, where he excelled as a three-year letterman in football. He later graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1952. Following his academic pursuits, Dwane served his nation with distinction as a Colonel in the US Army for 28 years. His military career took him across the globe, including postings in Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Germany, and various locations throughout the United States, until his retirement in 1980. After his military service, Dwane continued to contribute to the nation's defense by working for Textron Corp. for 16 years in the field of electronic warfare systems development. His professional accomplishments were a testament to his intellect and dedication. Dwane was a man of deep faith, remaining a lifelong Catholic and a devoted member of St. Andrews parish in Sierra Vista, Arizona, and St. Michael's Church in Poway, California. His faith was a guiding light throughout his life, providing strength and solace. A lover of sports, Dwane cherished playing golf, especially with his children, creating cherished memories on the greens. He was a lifelong fan of Notre Dame football, and later in life, his passion extended to University of Arizona basketball and the NBA's Golden State Warriors. Dwane possessed an extraordinary ability to maintain lifelong friendships, particularly with those from his childhood in Sioux Falls. His love for family and friends was boundless, and his kindness and warmth touched all who knew him. Dwane was predeceased by his parents, his cherished wife Claire, and his brother Milton Pins. Though our hearts are heavy with his loss, we find comfort in knowing he is reunited with them in peace. A service to honor and celebrate Dwane's life will be held on June 8, 2026, at Dearborn Memorial Park in Poway, CA. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Casa de las Campanas in San Diego, CA, for their compassionate care during Dwane's final days. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity of choice in Dwane's memory, reflecting his spirit of giving and service. Dwane F. Pins will be deeply missed yet fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of love, service, and friendship will remain a guiding light for his family and friends.
