Apopka, Florida—Dr. Reverend Gloria L.H. Stephens, a beacon of light and love, peacefully departed this world on April 8, 2026, at the age of 83. Surrounded by her beloved family, she transitioned from her earthly home, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, faith, and service that will be cherished by all who knew her.
Born on September 3, 1942, in Apopka, Florida, to the late Mr. Charlie Willie Holmes and Mrs. Far Ices Truth Holmes, Gloria was a cherished daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. Preceded in death by her parents, her sister Willie Mae Holmes, and brothers Luther Earl Holmes, Jimmy Holmes Sr., and Kerry Donovan Holmes, she is survived by her loving daughter Joy Stribling and son-in-law Peter. Her grandchildren, Christopher Diego (Kimberly), Tyler Matthew (Meagan), and Zoe Henry, brought immense joy to her life. Gloria also leaves behind her dear siblings, Charlie Mae Warren, Eddie Carl Holmes Sr., Rosemary Simmons (Robert), and Brenda Holmes, along with a host of friends who will forever hold her in their hearts.
Gloria's professional journey was marked by dedication and compassion. She began her career at Martin Marietta in Orlando, Florida, where she applied her expertise as a Registered Head Nurse. Her passion for education and healthcare led her to become the Director of Education with a focus on diabetes education. As a Nursing Adjunct Professor, she inspired countless students with her knowledge and empathy. Gloria concluded her career as a retired administrator with Orange County Public Schools, leaving an indelible mark on the educational community.
Her commitment to service extended beyond her profession. A proud member of the Nu Iota Omega, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated in Maitland, Florida, she embodied the sorority's values of sisterhood and service. Gloria's spiritual calling led her to serve with the South Apopka Ministerial Alliance, as Chaplain for the Ocoee Police Department, National Baptist USA, and as Secretary for the Progressive Senior Citizen Club. Her leadership extended to her role as a Board Member for Charter High Schools in Apopka, Aloma, and Chancery.
Gloria's life was enriched by her love for travel and adventure. From the vibrant landscapes of Africa to the serene beauty of Canada, she embraced the world with open arms. Whether attending conferences, church, or sorority events, her travels were a testament to her unyielding curiosity and zest for life. At home, she found solace in reading, music, and playing golf with her grandson. Her presence was a staple at art and music festivals, where she celebrated the beauty of human creativity. Above all, she cherished the time spent with her family and friends, nurturing those bonds with her encouraging spirit, wit, and kindness.
A service to celebrate Gloria's extraordinary life will be held at Macedonia Freewill Baptist Church at 11:22. The family extends their deepest gratitude to Cornerstone Hospice, Nu Iota Omega Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the many friends and family who have provided unwavering support during this time.
