Dr. Franklin S. Takei

November 8, 1932 — July 11, 2025

Dr. Franklin S. Takei, a revered scholar, beloved husband, and devoted family man, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2025, at the age of 92. Born on November 8, 1932, in the vibrant city of Honolulu, Hawaii, Frank lived a life full of intellectual curiosity, love, and dedication. Son of Mary and Shunji Takei, Frank was known for his gentle spirit and warm heart. He was predeceased by his sister, Nancy, with whom he shared many cherished memories. In 1966, he married Michele (Shelley) Kessler, who was once his student. Together, they shared a beautiful journey marked by deep philosophical discussions and mutual admiration. Their love story spanned over six decades, culminating in a joyous celebration of their 60th wedding anniversary in May of this year. Frank pursued his passion for knowledge at Penn State University, where he received his doctorate in 1966, the same day he became engaged to Shelley. His career as a professor was marked by his love for teaching philosophy, logic, and world religions. Frank was not only a gifted educator but also an active member of the academic community. He served as a sports photographer, announcer, and faculty advisor for returning adult students, always eager to enrich the lives of those around him. Beyond the classroom, Frank indulged in various hobbies, including building projects and creating stained glass art. He often credited his wife, Shelley, as his greatest teacher, humorously attributing his life lessons to her wisdom. Together, Frank and Shelley raised three remarkable children: Nicole, an accomplished interior designer; Quinn, a doctor of Oriental Medicine; and Allison, a talented dancer, gymnast, and life coach. Despite their insistence that their parenting skills were not up to par, their children excelled beyond expectations. Frank was a proud grandfather to five exceptional granddaughters—Kayah, Kira, Kayla, Kamiko, and Kai—whose talents surpassed even those of their accomplished parents. Every summer, Frank and Shelley found solace in their home at the Lily Dale Assembly, a place they held dear and where they cultivated many lifelong friendships. A Celebration of Life will be held over Thanksgiving at the beach, bringing together family and friends to honor Frank's incredible journey and the indelible mark he left on their lives. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project to honor Frank's generous spirit and commitment to giving back. Frank's legacy is one of love, wisdom, and kindness. His memory will forever be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
