With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Dr. Barney R. Iles, who departed this life peacefully on April 4, 2026, at the Delaney at South Shore in League City, Texas. Born on October 25, 1936, in Overton, Texas, Barney lived a life rich with love, service, and dedication to his family, community, and career. Barney was the cherished son of the late Barney Hale Iles and Mattie Hugh Iles. He was the beloved brother of Charles "Buddy" Iles and is predeceased by his sisters Joella Borcherding and Nancy Sue Iles. Barney's legacy is profoundly marked by his devotion to his family. Barney married Barbara Lynn Webb in 1958 and divorced in 1974. They had four children. Barney is preceded in death by his loving wife, Sally Iles, with whom he married in 1977 and shared a beautiful life. Sally had two daughters from a previous marriage. Together they nurtured a family that continues to carry forth their values and love. Barney is survived by his devoted children, Nancy Iles Gruener, Robin Hoggard Martinez, and David L. Iles. His memory is lovingly carried on by his grandchildren Lindsey Gruener Waggoner, Meagan Laurey, Ryan Laurey, Emily Dorman, Sam Dorman, Dreagon Iles, Aaron Iles, his great-grandchildren Logan Lou Waggoner and Kaylie Crowe, and Hector Martinez, husband of Robin Martinez. Barney also mourned the loss of his children Richard Derek Iles, Don Ray Iles, Kimberly Kay Laurey, son-in-law Richard Gruener, and grandson Richie Iles, finding solace in the enduring bonds of family. Barney's journey began in Overton, Texas, where he graduated from Overton High School in 1954 as a standout student and 4H President of Texas. His athletic prowess earned him a football scholarship to Paris Junior College, where he excelled both on the field and in the classroom, serving as President of the Student Body and being honored as Mr. Paris Junior College. Although an injury sidelined his football career at the University of Tulsa, Barney's passion for sports and education never waned. He dedicated his life to education, beginning as a coach at Big Sandy High School and Pine Tree High School, and later at Henderson County Junior College, where he also served as Activity Director of Student Services. Barney pursued higher education at East Texas State University, earning his Undergraduate, Masters, and Doctorate Degrees. He became a revered figure in the educational community, serving as Director of Intramural Sports and as a member of the Doctoral Committee at E.T.S.U. Barney's career culminated in Clear Lake City, Houston, Texas, where he served as Assistant Principal and Personnel Director at La Porte High School, concluding his career as the Interim Superintendent of La Porte I.S.D. His dedication to education and leadership left an indelible mark on countless students and colleagues. Beyond his professional achievements, Barney's most treasured role was that of a devoted family man. His love for his wife, children, and grandchildren was unparalleled. He was a constant presence at their sporting events and activities, lending his support and expertise from the sidelines with unwavering enthusiasm. A celebration of Barney's remarkable life will be held on April 11, 2026, Visitation at 11:30 pm and Service at 12:00 pm at The Watershed Church, located at 1751 E League City Pkwy, League City, TX 77573. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and nurses at The Delaney at South Shore in League City, Texas, for their compassionate care during Barney's final days. Dr. Barney R. Iles' legacy of love, education, and family will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
