Douglas Mead, a devoted father, grandfather, and cherished friend, peacefully departed this world on March 26, 2026, at the age of 77, surrounded by the love of his family at Memorial Hospital. Born in South Bend on January 19, 1949, Doug was a man whose life was a testament to dedication, resilience, and the simple joys of love and family.
Doug was the beloved son of Frank and Stephanie Mead. He was predeceased by his father, Frank, whose memory he cherished throughout his life. Doug is survived by his loving daughters, Cecelia and Mary, who were the pride and joy of his life. His legacy continues through his four grandchildren, Timothy, Brooke, Brayton, and Riley, who brought him immense happiness and with whom he shared endless stories and laughter.
A proud graduate of Penn High School, class of 1967, Doug went on to serve his country with honor. He spent six years in the Army, completing two tours in Vietnam. His bravery and dedication to his fellow soldiers were a testament to his unwavering courage and selflessness. Doug’s stories of camaraderie and perseverance during his military service remain a source of inspiration to his family and friends.
After his military service, Doug embarked on a 40-year career as a cross-country truck driver. Known for his steadfast work ethic and reliability, he navigated countless miles across the nation, building friendships along the way and leaving an indelible mark on everyone he met. His colleagues remember him as a man of integrity and warmth, someone who could always be counted on for a kind word or a helping hand.
Doug’s life was filled with passions beyond his work. He loved the open road, the feeling of freedom it provided, and the stories it gifted him. He cherished time with his family, whether sharing a meal or attending his grandchildren’s events, always present, always supportive.
A service to honor and celebrate Doug’s life will be held on April 1, 2026, at 12:00 PM at the Elks Lodge. Friends and family are invited to gather and share memories of a man who lived his life with a full heart and a generous spirit.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Doug’s memory to a veterans’ charity of your choice, honoring his commitment and service to his country.
Though his journey in this world has ended, Doug Mead’s spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him. He will be remembered for his kindness, his strength, and the love he gave so freely. As we say goodbye, we hold onto the memories and the love that will forever bind us to this remarkable man.
