Douglas MacArthur Stermer "General", a beloved husband, father, pops, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully at home on October 18, 2026, after a courageous 7-year battle with Alzheimer's. Born on March 30, 1942, in Coaldale, PA, Doug was the cherished son of George Washington Stermer and Mildred Stermer. Doug's life was a testament to love, dedication, and service. He was predeceased by his parents, Mildred and George Washington Stermer, his sister, Mildred "Honey" DeLash, his brothers, William "Billy" Stermer and George Stermer. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Justin Stermer O'Donnell, Nick Kasper, Mia Kasper, Zackery Griffith, Ethan Griffith, Zoe Griffith, and Angelia Turner. Doug's early years were marked by his education at Jim Thorpe High School, from which he graduated in 1960. He went on to serve his country with honor in the U.S. Air Force from 1960 to 1964, with a tour in Labrador. His career was dedicated to innovation and excellence, initially at Philco Ford in New Boston, NH, before the family relocated to Dale City, VA, in 1975. There, Doug joined the team at General Electric, where he worked diligently until his retirement in 2002. Doug had a passion for life, cherishing the simple joys and adventures it brought. He was an avid Washington Redskins fan and a enthusiastic New York Yankees fan. He found joy in his regular visits to Sam's Club, BJ's Wholesale Club and Costco. He traveled extensively across the United States to reconnect with friends and family, a testament to his enduring relationships. Yet, his greatest pleasure came from being with his family, especially watching his grandchildren excel in sports and activities. Affectionately known as "Pops," he was a constant presence at football, baseball, cheerleading, and softball events. Throughout his life, Doug was known for his boundless kindness and a heart of gold. He had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued. His quiet nature hid the depth of his compassion and generosity, always going above and beyond to help others. A service to celebrate Doug's life will be held on October 23, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Haisley Funeral Home, located at 2041 SW Bayshore Blvd, Port St. Lucie, FL 34984.
