Douglas Leon Ackermann Sr.

June 18, 1957 — September 27, 2026

Douglas Ackermann, a devoted family man and a proud veteran, passed away on September 27, 2026, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on June 18, 1957, in Ellendale, North Dakota, Douglas lived a life filled with love, laughter, and service to others. Douglas was the beloved son of Leon and Beverly Ackermann, who have both predeceased him, along with his brother David and sister Sarah. He is survived by his sister, Clara Broer, and his cherished children: Jessica Marie Jansen, Douglas Leon Ackermann, and Kathryn Ann Johnson. As a proud grandfather, Douglas adored his grandchildren: Brenden, Skylar, Tisa, Samantha, Tatum, and Bradley, who brought immense joy to his life. Among his close circle, his friendship with Kim Lott and her two daughters held a special place in his heart. Raised in Ellendale, Douglas graduated from Ellendale High School in 1975, where he was an active member of the debate team. Shortly after, he dedicated his life to serving his country, enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. Over his remarkable 20-year career, Douglas reached the rank of Technical Sergeant (TSGT) and served as a crew chief on the Galaxy C-5 cargo planes. His service took him to various parts of the world, including Japan, Korea, Alaska, and Hawaii, while stationed at Travis Air Force Base in California. His commendable service earned him the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, the Air Force Longevity Service Award, and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. After retiring from the Air Force, Douglas returned to his hometown of Ellendale to support his family. He spent a decade working at Fargo Assembly as a supervisor in shipping and receiving and maintenance, followed by a fulfilling career at Harris Machine Co., where he specialized in refurbishing brakes for heavy equipment. Douglas had a passion for music and was known for his love of concerts, attending more than most could imagine. He also found great joy in woodworking, creating pieces that were as sturdy and warm as his character. Known for his quick wit, sarcasm, and warm smile, Douglas had a unique gift for making people feel welcomed and valued. His kindness and generosity left a positive impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. In memory of Douglas and in lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization close to his heart, based in Jacksonville, FL. Douglas's legacy of love, service, and laughter will continue to inspire and guide his family and friends. He will be profoundly missed but never forgotten. Please join us Late Spring or Early Summer of 2027 for a Celebration of Life. Date, Time, and Location TBD.
