August 23, 1934 — June 3, 2026

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Dorsey Leandro Jones, a beloved husband, father, brother, and educator, who peacefully departed this life on June 3, 2026, after a courageous battle with a sudden illness. Dorsey was surrounded by love and family, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew him. Born on August 23, 1934, in the small town of Crossett, nestled in Ashley County, Arkansas, Dorsey was the cherished son of Dorsey Leandro, Sr. and Dorothy Louise Jones, who predeceased him. From an early age, the values of kindness and community were instilled in him, attributes he carried throughout his life. Dorsey's journey of love began on the Christmas Day of 1960 when he wed the love of his life, Fredda Beavers, in Warren, Arkansas. Their union, spanning over 65 years, was one filled with unwavering support, love, and a shared commitment to family and faith. Together, they raised three children: Dornetta Louise Hobbs (Charles), D'Juana Faye, and David B., who, along with his cherished brother Jerril L., survive him. Dorsey's family extended further, blessed with three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren, all of whom were the apples of his eye, carrying forward his legacy of warmth and compassion. A proud graduate of Desha High School in 1951, Dorsey furthered his education with a BA in music education from Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana, followed by an MA in Education Administration from National-Louis University in Evanston, Illinois. His passion for music was not only a personal joy but a lifelong vocation. Dorsey devoted his career to music education, teaching at Central High School in Lake Village, Arkansas, and Southeast High School in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, before moving to Evanston, Illinois. There, he imparted his love for music to students at Haven and Skiles Middle Schools until his retirement in 1994. Dorsey also served his country with honor, participating in the U.S. Army Band before his honorable discharge in 1958. His service was a testament to his dedication and commitment to his nation. Deeply rooted in his Christian faith, Dorsey was actively involved with the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church at every stop in his life. He served as a Trustee and Trustee Emeritus at the Fountain Of Hope AME Church in Las Vegas, Nevada, leaving a lasting impact on his fellow congregants. Music was his spiritual language, and he was affectionately known as the "Interdenominational Organist," a title he wore with pride, especially during his time with the Ebenezer A.M.E. Church Gospel Choir in Evanston, an experience he held dear to his heart. Dorsey was a man of many passions, with music and family at the forefront. His love for sports, particularly football, baseball, and tennis, brought him joy and camaraderie. Yet, it was his personal qualities that truly defined him. Gregarious and welcoming, Dorsey had an innate ability to make everyone feel valued. His kindness and generosity were boundless, and his radiant smile could light up any room. The family extends their deepest gratitude to all who have offered their support and prayers during this time. Dorsey will be dearly missed, but his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. He lives on through the music he loved, the family he cherished, and the countless lives he touched with his warmth and grace. A celebration of Dorsey's life will be held on June 17th at 2:00 PM at Palm Eastern Mortuary 7600 S. Eastern Ave, Las Vegas, NV. Stories will be shared, music will be played, and his life will be honored in the way he would have wanted—surrounded by love and in joyous remembrance. Interment will be at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, NV. Rest in peace, Dorsey Leandro Jones. You have left this world a better place, and your legacy of love and music will echo in our hearts forever.
