Dorothy Mae Pryor

Dorothy Mae Pryor, affectionately known as "Dea," passed away peacefully at her home on July 17, 2026, at the age of 88, surrounded by her loving family. Born on February 8, 1934, in the quaint town of Holly Springs, Mississippi, Dorothy was the cherished daughter of Eddie and Lottie McGhee, and the youngest of four siblings. Dorothy's life was a testament to her steadfast faith, having embraced Christianity at a young age at Yarbrough Chapel C.M.E. Church in Holly Springs. Her spiritual journey was one of devotion, deeply woven into the fabric of her life and the lives she touched. In her early years, Dorothy moved to Aurora, Illinois, where she embarked on a fulfilling career that expressed her nurturing spirit. From the warmth of her home, she established a daycare that became a haven for generations of families. For over thirty years, she provided loving care and guidance, shaping the lives of countless children until her well-deserved retirement. Dorothy's legacy is rich with love, devotion, and culinary delights. Her kitchen was a place of joy and gathering, where her exceptional cooking brought family and friends together, creating cherished memories that will endure in the hearts of those she leaves behind. Dorothy's family was her greatest treasure. She is survived by her beloved children: sons Larry (Jackie) McGhee, Johnnie McGhee, Micheal (Mary Lou) Pryor, and Timothy Pryor; daughters Linda Pryor (Anthony Birks), Sandra (Kevin) Rayford, and Farnica Blakes (Roy Brisco). Her grandchildren, Jon Karla, Shayla, Thurnica, Thurman, Contessia, Shareese, Dorothy, Mychal, and Justice, along with her great-grandchildren Cam'ren, Elyiss, Kemarrie, De'Airrah, Kammiah, Mychal Jr., Isiah, and Eriq, will forever cherish her memory. Dorothy also leaves behind her goddaughter Phyllis Perkins, a host of nieces, nephews, and countless friends who were touched by her kindness. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, beloved sons Dennis and Jerry Pryor, her brothers Charlie and Robert "Shorty" McGhee, and her sister Birtha B. Stewart. Dorothy's life was a living testament to her faith, as beautifully encapsulated in John 11:25-26: "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die." The family has entrusted her arrangements to James Funeral Services, with cremation provided by Twin Pines Crematory. A memorial service to celebrate Dorothy's remarkable life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Dorothy's family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice, in her honor, continuing her legacy of giving and compassion. As we remember Dorothy, we find comfort in the words of Revelations 21:4: "And God will wipe every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away." Dorothy Mae Pryor's life was a beacon of love and faith, and her spirit will forever illuminate the hearts of those she touched.
