Dorothy Mae Hopkins

May 28, 1942 — September 27, 2026

Dorothy Mae Hopkins, a radiant soul who graced this earth for 84 years, passed peacefully on September 27, 2026. Born on May 28, 1942, in the nurturing embrace of Bessemer, Alabama, Dorothy was the beloved daughter of Romelia Brown Jones and Tommy Jones. She was a sister, a friend, and an inspiration to many. Dorothy’s life was a testament to love, resilience, and grace. Her early years in Jefferson County, Alabama, were filled with warmth and joy, embraced by her parents and sister, Fannie, who all preceded her in death. Yet, Dorothy's spirit remained unyielding, her heart expanding to include her nieces and nephews who became like her own children. She is lovingly remembered by Brenda Lee Peterson, Micheal Angelo Peterson, and Antasha Denise Peterson Bracey. Her goddaughter and cousin, Eleanor Reid, along with her first cousin, Phillip Solomon, continue to carry Dorothy’s legacy forward. A host of great nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends who cherished her deeply also survive her. Dorothy’s career was as illustrious as the life she lived. She dedicated much of her professional journey to the National Urban League, championing equality and empowerment. Later, she brought her talents to the bustling corridors of Goldman Sachs, where she forged enduring friendships, particularly with Andrea Parham and Arbella Salik. One of her most cherished bonds was with Brenda Ellison, whom she met at a Christmas party, marking the beginning of a beautiful, lifelong friendship. A woman of many talents, Dorothy’s creativity knew no bounds. She found joy and solace in sewing and knitting, sharing her gifts with all who sought her wisdom. Her adventurous spirit led her across the globe, from the serene landscapes of Switzerland and Germany to the vibrant shores of the Caribbean Islands. Dorothy’s love for the outdoors was evident in the lush garden she tended with care, and her daring exploits in hot air ballooning and snorkeling revealed her zest for life. Dorothy was a beacon of warmth and kindness, her approachable nature making her a friend to all. Her home was a sanctuary, always open to those in need. Family gatherings were her delight, as was her unwavering faith, which she nurtured throughout her life at church. To all who knew her, she was Auntie Dot, a name synonymous with love and compassion. As we gather to celebrate Dorothy’s remarkable life, we find solace in the words of her dear friend, Andra Parham, who reminds us that there is no end, only transformation. A memorial service will be held on October 17, 2026, at 2:00 PM at First Alliance Church, 4400 Buffaloe Rd. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to a charity of your choice, honoring Dorothy’s generous spirit and lifelong commitment to helping others. Her journey may have transformed, but her love and legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched.

In lieu of flowers, the family of Dorothy Mae Hopkins welcomes donations to a charity, nonprofit, church, or organization of your choosing.
