With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Dorothy Green, a beloved mother, grandmother, educator, and servant of God, who departed this life on July 1, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on October 11, 1941, in Bunkie, Louisiana, Dorothy was the cherished daughter of Martin and Mary Lou Green. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved sister Vonnie Green (Coy Gentry), and her brothers, Samuel Green and Walter D. Green.
Dorothy is survived by her devoted siblings, Buckley Green, Celestine Green, and Sarah Jarrett. Her legacy continues through her five loving children: Cheryl Brown, Darren Green (Alicia Buckley), Lamonte Green, Lawrence Green, and Jaylin Womack-Green. Dorothy's heart and home were filled with the love of her 20 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and a host of godchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her love and guidance.
Dorothy’s journey of education began in the public school systems of Jackson, Mississippi, and Saginaw, Michigan. She furthered her studies at Jackson College, earning an Associate of Arts degree from Delta College in Bay City/Midland, Michigan. Dorothy’s passion for learning led her to Central Michigan University, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and Sociology. She crowned her academic achievements with a Master of Arts degree in Guidance and Counseling from Jackson State University.
Her professional life was a testament to her dedication to education and compassion. Dorothy began her career as a substitute teacher in Saginaw city and township school systems. She went on to inspire as an English and Journalism instructor in Buena Vista, Michigan, a Title I Reading teacher at the Saginaw Detention Center, and a home health care coordinator in Los Angeles, California. She concluded her distinguished career as a GED instructor at Jackson State University, where she retired, leaving behind a legacy of learning and empowerment.
Dorothy’s life was a testament to her unwavering faith and devotion to God. Baptized in 1950 at Progressive Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi, she was the first licensed Evangelist of the church. Her service to her faith community included roles as a certified teacher in the COPP Program of Nashville, Tennessee, a certified missionary, and a licensed evangelist. Her contributions were vast, including roles such as Sunday School Superintendent, Choir President, Youth Counselor, and many more.
Dorothy was a woman of deep faith, remarkable strength, and genuine compassion. She was known for her kind heart, gentle spirit, and selfless devotion to God, her family, and her community. Her life was a beacon of warmth, wisdom, and love, inspiring countless individuals through her encouragement and generosity.
A service celebrating Dorothy’s life will be held on July 11, 2026, at 9:00 AM at Hixson-Ducote Funeral Home, located at 3527 State Route 107, Plaucheville, Louisiana. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a charity of your choice.
Her family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all who have shared in Dorothy’s journey. Her legacy of faith, compassion, wisdom, and service will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know and love her. Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit lives on in every life she touched and in the enduring promises of God’s eternal love.
