Dorothy Elizabeth Bowman

Dorothy Elizabeth Bowman, affectionately known as Libby, peacefully passed into the loving arms of her Creator on August 27, 2026. Born on December 1, 1953, in Bushwood, Maryland, Libby spent her life in St. Mary's County, a place she dearly loved and where she touched countless lives. She was a devoted mother, a cherished sister, a beloved aunt, and a steadfast friend. Libby's early years were marked by the warmth and bustle of a large family. She was one of nine siblings who were raised with the values of faith and community at the heart of their lives. Baptized at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bushwood, Libby embraced her faith and carried those teachings throughout her life, sharing the love and compassion she learned there with everyone she met. Libby found joy and purpose in caring for others, a calling she pursued through her work at St. Mary's Nursing Center and Taylor Farm Assisted Living. Her nurturing spirit and dedication to her work left an indelible mark on both colleagues and residents, and she was known for her kindness and genuine concern for those in her care. A natural storyteller with an infectious smile, Libby had a remarkable ability to bring joy and laughter to any gathering. Her home was a welcoming haven, where she hosted Sunday dinners and holiday celebrations that were filled with love, laughter, and, of course, her legendary stuffed ham. Family and friends were the center of her universe, and she never missed an opportunity to make those around her feel cherished and loved. Libby was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy L. Bowman; two brothers, James Dunbar Curtis and George F. Bowman, Jr.; and her sister, Annie M. Bowman. Though they have left this world, their memories remain alive in the hearts of those who loved them. Her legacy lives on through her treasured family: her beloved son, Bernard E. Butler, and daughter-in-law, Juliette; her sister, Julia R. Bowman; her brothers, Matthew Bowman and his wife, Joan, and William Bowman; and her sister-in-law, Mary M. Bowman. She also leaves behind her nephew and nieces, Mary Hunt, Alphonso Bowman, Donna Thompson, George Bowman, and Jacob Bowman, whom she helped raise; her godchildren, including James Butler; her late godmother, Margaret Emily Armstrong; and her best friend, Lisa Herbert. Libby's extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends will continue to honor her memory with the love and laughter she so freely shared. In remembrance of Libby, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice, reflecting her lifelong commitment to kindness and service. Libby's departure leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew her, but her spirit remains a guiding light. Her legacy of love, laughter, and compassion will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to be touched by her life.
