Dorothy (Brandt) Powell, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, peacefully departed this world on July 29, 2026, at her cherished home, embraced by the love of her family. Born on September 1, 1943, in the quaint town of Waukon, Iowa, Dorothy embodied a life filled with love, warmth, and an unwavering dedication to those she held dear. Dorothy was the treasured daughter of the late Mary K (Urell) Brandt and Ralph J Brandt. Her formative years were spent in a country schoolhouse in Waukon, where she developed a love for learning that would guide her throughout life. She was married to the love of her life, Richard Powell, on a beautiful autumn day, September 25, 1982, at their farm home in Atkins, Iowa. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, love, and countless memories until Richard's passing. Dorothy's nurturing spirit was evident in her career as a Certified Nursing Assistant, where she brought comfort and care to those in need. Her home was a haven for children, as she ran an in-home daycare for many years, providing a safe and loving environment for countless young ones. Later, she shared her culinary talents as a cook at Aegon, where her warmth and kindness were felt by all who crossed her path. A devoted member of the American Legion of Atkins, Dorothy found joy in serving her community. Her hobbies reflected her love for creativity and the outdoors. Dorothy was particularly passionate about her garden and flower arrangements, transforming her yard into a colorful sanctuary that brought joy to both her and her visitors. Her home was always filled with laughter and warmth, especially during her famed 'watermelon days,' where friends and family gathered for swimming and feasting. Dorothy's legacy lives on through her children: Theresa Werner, Brad (Gin) Ernster, Carrie (Dirk) Ernster, Coral Almquist, Tracey (Mark) Saunders, and Scott (Tanya) Powell. Her 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren will forever cherish the loving memories and wisdom she imparted. Known for her quick wit and caring nature, Dorothy never spoke an unkind word and welcomed everyone with open arms. Her talent for crafting, particularly woodworking, was matched only by her love for gardening, where she found peace and joy. Dorothy is predeceased by her husband Richard, her parents Ralph and Mary, her in-laws Homer and Martha Powell, her brothers Leo and Steve Brandt, and dear friends Judy and Howard Sorum. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Mercy Hospice in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for their unwavering support and care during Dorothy’s final days.
