In Loving Memory

Dorisjean "Candy" Jones-Wilks
July 14, 1962 — May 25, 2026
Dorisjean "Candy" Jones-Wilks, a beacon of kindness and a life devoted to service, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2026, at the age of 63. Born on July 14, 1962, in the heart of Kansas City, Kansas, Candy was the cherished daughter of Gracie C. Jones and Caranza Etier. She was welcomed into heaven by her beloved parents and her dear brother, William C. Jones.
Candy's life was a testament to love, learning, and generosity. She was a devoted mother to her children, Gracelynn L. Howard (Edward) and Kristopher D. Wilks, who were the pride and joy of her life. She is also survived by her loving sisters Patricia J. Townsend, Beverly A. McKinney, Gloria Jones, and Barbara W. Jones-McNair, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends who became family.
A proud graduate of J.C. Harmon High School in 1980, Candy pursued further studies in law and earned several IT certifications, embodying her passion for lifelong learning. Her career spanned several impactful roles, including working as a Communication Manager at the University of Kansas Medical Center, a vital part of the IT Department at SRS, a Notary Public, and an Income Tax Preparer. Her professional journey was marked by dedication and a commitment to helping others.
Candy's heart found a home at the Israel of God Church, where she actively participated in her community and worked tirelessly at local and national election polls. Her hobbies reflected her nurturing spirit—she loved gardening, sewing, reading her Bible, and listening to gospel music. She had a remarkable ability to find assistance for seniors and sought educational opportunities for both children and adults. Her curiosity led her to research new medical therapies and treatments, always eager to share her findings with those in need.
Known for her warm and welcoming nature, Candy never met a stranger. She was a fountain of wisdom and kindness, always ready to offer a meal, a kind word, or a listening ear. She selflessly cared for others, often putting their needs before her own. Her home was a haven for children in need, and many lovingly called her "Auntie," "Sister," or "Grandma Doris." Her compassion extended to cooking for women's shelters and food pantries, offering her skills in resume writing and letters of recommendation, and running errands for those unable to do so themselves.
A service to honor Candy's remarkable life will be held on June 5, 2026, at 9:00 AM at Mrs. J.W. Jones Memorial Chapel, located at 703 N. 10th Street, Kansas City, KS 66102. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to KU Medical Center, Overland Park Regional Medical Center, Dr. Allen Greiner, Dr. Talal Khan, and ARNP Zorah Hussaini for the compassionate care provided to Candy.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Candy's memory by extending a hand to someone in need, just as she would have done. Her legacy of love, service, and unwavering kindness will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.
