It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Doretha Ray-Bridges, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Doretha passed away peacefully on April 11, 2026, surrounded by her loving family and the beauty she so adored. She was 68 years old.
Born on August 8, 1957, in the quaint town of Summer Lee, West Virginia, Doretha was the beloved daughter of James Ray and Patty Thomas. Her childhood was spent in a close-knit community where she formed bonds that would last a lifetime. She was preceded in death by her parents and her dear siblings Reginald Ray, James Ray, and Cassandra Brown. Their memories remained a constant source of strength and comfort throughout her life.
Doretha's journey was marked by her unwavering dedication to family and her community. She was a proud graduate of John Adams High School, Class of 1975. Her professional life saw her excel as an Administration Representative at esteemed organizations such as Eliza Bryant, Habitat for Humanity, and Anniston Housing Authority. Her work was not just a career but a testament to her commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
Doretha had a flair for creating beauty in her surroundings, a talent most evident in her love for shopping and home decorating. Her home was always a warm, inviting space, filled with laughter and love. She was known for her exceptional ability to host events, where family and friends gathered, creating memories that would be cherished forever.
Her legacy lives on through her surviving family: her devoted children, Dana Means (Timothy Jr), Patricia Fitch (Jeffery), Alisia Hunter (A.C), and Alton Ray; her treasured grandchildren Dyani Scott, La’Onna Woods, and Damon Scott; her siblings Pete Thomas and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Each of them carries a piece of her heart and spirit.
Doretha's life was also enriched by the companionship of her special friend, Raymond Williams, and a myriad of friends who were touched by her kindness, generosity, and unwavering loyalty.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Shiama Ray, Jeffery Fitch Jr., Alton Ray, and the compassionate staff at UAB for their exceptional care during Doretha's final days. As we bid farewell, we hold onto the words, "Forever in our hearts."
A celebration of Doretha's remarkable life will be held on April 25, 2026, where family and friends will gather to honor the profound impact she made on all who knew her.
