Donnie was one of seven children born to Marvin Sr. and Lorena Pullen, both of whom predeceased him. He grew up in a lively household, surrounded by the love and camaraderie of his five sisters: Dorothy Evans, Peggy Whittington, Beverly Gilmore, Marinell White, and Marva Pullen. As a young man, Donnie's journey took him to the U.S. Army, where he served his country with honor and dedication.
After his military service, Donnie pursued his passion and talent in painting and decorating, attending the Bureau of Apprenticeship to hone his skills. His career as an apprenticeship painter and decorator was marked by craftsmanship and a commitment to excellence, reflecting his belief in the value of hard work and integrity.
In 1981, Donnie married the love of his life, Glenda Pullen. Their 45-year union was a testament to enduring love, partnership, and mutual respect. Together, they built a beautiful family, raising four wonderful children: Cherelyn (Michael) Dunlap, Charron Basey, Natalie (Xavier) Tharpe, and Nikita Melva. Donnie's legacy of love and kindness also lives on in his four cherished grandchildren: Rayan, Michael, Everlei, and Riley, who will carry forward the lessons and values he imparted.
Donnie was a man of many passions. He found joy in fishing and hunting, reveling in the serenity of nature. Sports held a special place in his heart, as did music—where his love for dancing, singing, and playing the piano brought happiness to those around him. Known for his friendly demeanor and warm smile, Donnie was straightforward yet sincere, always speaking with honesty and living with integrity.
A celebration of Donnie's life will take place on March 21, 2026, in Lansing, Michigan, where family and friends will gather to honor his memory, share stories, and offer comfort to one another.
