January 25, 1945 — June 5, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and cherished memories that we announce the passing of Donald Sutphen, who departed this world on June 5, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on January 25, 1945, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Donald's life was a testament to love, service, and unwavering dedication to family and community. Donald was the beloved son of the late Samuel and Edith Sutphen, who instilled in him the values of kindness and generosity that he carried throughout his life. From a young age, Donald showed a remarkable ability to connect with others, a trait that would define both his personal and professional endeavors. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1965, a period that honed his sense of duty and camaraderie. After his military service, Donald embraced a diverse career path, working as a volunteer fireman, carpenter, barber, and chauffeur. His willingness to lend a hand was legendary, as was his penchant for sharing a joke or a delightful story, bringing smiles to all who crossed his path. In 1969, Donald married the love of his life, Janice Perruso, in a ceremony in New Jersey. Together, they built a beautiful life, enriching the lives of their three children, Eric, Carol Ann, and Catherine, and later doting on their eight cherished grandchildren: E.J., Tyler, Doug, Victoria, Mackenzie, Brenna, Emma, and Dylan. Donald's family was his pride and joy, and he reveled in their achievements and happiness. Donald was a man of many passions. He was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast, particularly enjoying little league and basketball games. His adventurous spirit led him to travel widely, but he always found solace in the simple pleasure of nightly popcorn shared with loved ones. A dedicated community member, Donald was a retired member of the North Branch Volunteer Fire Department, where he served for eight years. He was also a proud Rotarian for a decade, contributing to local and global initiatives with his characteristic enthusiasm and warmth. Donald is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Janice; his loving children and their spouses, Eric (Lynne), Carol Ann (David), and Catherine (Al); his adored grandchildren; his brother Garret (Millie); his sister Prudence Frechette; and numerous nieces and nephews who will forever hold him in their hearts. He is predeceased by his parents, Samuel and Edith Sutphen, whose spirits now welcome him home. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Donald’s honor to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation at T2T.org, reflecting his lifelong commitment to helping those in need. As we celebrate the life of Donald Sutphen, we remember him as a steadfast husband, a doting father and grandfather, a loyal friend, and a man whose laughter and light will continue to illuminate our lives. His legacy of love, service, and joy will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
