Donald Stewart Butters
March 28, 1942 — September 24, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Donald Stewart Butters on September 24, 2026, at the hospice Nursing Home in Portsmouth, NH. Don spent his final summer surrounded by the love and care of family at home hospice. Born on March 28, 1942, in Rockville Center, Long Island, New York, Don lived a life filled with love, laughter, and dedication to family and friends.
Don was the cherished son of the late Harold A. Butters and Doris H. Butters. He was predeceased by his younger brother, David Drake Butters, and former wife, Susan Stedman Butters. His legacy lives on through his beloved partner, Judy Beeman, his loving children, daughter Lisa Lynch Butters and son Jason Butters, and his adored grandchildren, Brooke Butters and Madison Butters. He is also survived by his dear sister, Carol Butters OBrion Watson, who shared in the joy and challenges of life with him.
Educated at Winchester High School, where he graduated in 1960, Don went on to complete his studies at Wentworth Institute in Boston, MA, in 1962. It was during his early working years at the Barbara Dean Restaurant in Ogunquit, Maine, that he met Sue, his former wife and lifelong friend. They were married on June 19, 1965, and shared many adventures together. An engineering technician by profession, Don contributed his skills and dedication to GCA Corporation and Light Machines Corporation, earning respect and admiration from his colleagues.
Don's love for the outdoors was a constant throughout his life. He found joy in skiing and cherished the time spent on his family's boats, a passion he later shared with Susan on their own vessel. Known for his quick wit and warm smile, Don had a remarkable ability to lighten any mood with a well-timed joke. His willingness to lend a hand in any project epitomized his generous spirit and kind heart.
A man who lived life to the fullest, Don's memory will be cherished by all who knew him. His legacy is one of love, laughter, and a readiness to help others, no matter the task. Those wishing to honor Don's memory may do so by making a donation to a charity of their choice, celebrating his life by supporting causes that make a difference.
While we mourn the loss of Don, we find solace in the memories of his laughter, kindness, and the profound impact he had on those around him. May his soul rest in peace, and may his spirit continue to guide and inspire us.
